disappointing - By: J. Daniel, 07 Aug 2008
Got this as I was a fan of Navarro & of some of Strauss' other work (Manson, Motley cru etc) but this is just dull dull dull. In fact i got so bored i never finished it. It is basicallly a picture book (wow look at alll the Celebs I hang out with...yawn) with a diary element to it. Maybe I have missed something but i found it pretty much rubbish... shame as I have heard Navarro has had quite a life & a proper autobiography (which this had been marketed as I'm sure) would surely make for a compelling read. This however, a diary set in probably the least creative part of his career, is not.
Disappointing. - By: L. L. Beddall, 25 May 2008
This book had the potential to be a good read but I was left feeling disappointed. The premise of the book is good- the people who visit Navarro's house throughout the year have their photo taken in his booth & these are printed in the book. However the stories & pictures printed next to each other do not match so I spent time looking through the book & trying to match faces to descriptions- frustrating!

Navarro could have come across as deeply sensitive & emotionallly scarred but, in my opinion, he came across as self-centred, egotistical & self-indulgent. For true Navarro fans only.
Another sell out junkie be moaning his 'terrible' life - By: Zappakins, 07 May 2008
What a self-centered egotistical jerk Navarro is... The word 'I' is used far too often & you wonder if Dave ever considers anyone other than himself. His life is alll about shooting up & bad sex... great... oh & don't forget Dave's obsession with analysing alll his thoughts & feelings...so boring when you consider he is so drugged up he probably has no grip on anything REAL.
Ok read but not outstanding. - By: tomkat, 12 Jul 2007
This book follows a year in the life of Dave Navarro as seen through the eyes of Dave & co-writer Neil Strauss, who spent a large part of the year living at Daves house in the Hollywood Hills. The book was written when Dave was a heroin addict & as a result of his drug addiction I found a large part of the book was just the mad & sad ramblings of a drug addict, who just seemed to stay at home alll day shooting up?
The parts written by Strauss however are an interesting read & give a good insight into the dark self-destructive world of Navarro.
Dave had a photo-booth installled in his house while the book was being written, and everyone that entered the house had to have photos taken for the book. All the photos are the best part of the book but it would have been nice to know who the photos are of, as I found myself reading about people who are in the book but not being able to put a face to those people who are being written about because the photos are so random.
Overalll this book is worth reading its a bit slow in parts but is still a good read.
Intimate insight into rock star's life.. - By: , 22 Dec 2005
Teaming up with Neil Strauss was a match made in heaven for Dave Navarro when they wrote Don't Try This At Home. Depicting a year in the life of Navarro, with his already present heroin addiction (now almost taking over his life), his rehabilitation & the epilogue which is his marriage in 2003 to Carmen Electra, this is an intimate insight into this rock star's life. Sometimes it feels as if you shouldn't be reading, but it is so compelling, even though it is "dark" in places.
During the writing of the book, Navarro had a photobooth installled & anyone who came by his Hollywood home had to go in the booth. As a result, those pictures are scattered alll over the pages of the book - glamour & debauchery alll the way!
I'd recommend this to anyone who's interested in the rock'n' roll lifestyle - especiallly from a personal viewpoint. If you loved The Dirt & The Long Hard Road Out Of Hell, you'll enjoy this.
