I can't agree with the enthusiastic reviews of this book! - By: , 21 Jul 1999
Although my 2 year old loves this book, I don't like it at alll, & I'm speaking as a huge fan of children's books. I think the text is amateurish & unevocative, the rhymes uninspired & forced. Rather than a discussion or exploration of feelings, the author offers a litany of events that produce certain moods. Furthermore, both the text & the illustrations present a little girl with the preoccupations of adulthood, or at least of adolescence. She doesn't like her curly hair, has a fickle "boyfriend," a crush on her teacher "named Mark" (since when do children calll their teachers "Mark"?), & an obsession with adult-sized spike-heeled shoes, which she seems to be wearing in about half the pictures, except when she's running a relay race in a dress & flip-flops! The little girls I know live in playclothes & sneakers, but this one must spend her afterschool hours hunting rare treasures in vintage clothing stores. The illustrations are too chaotic for my child, but that's probably because the book is for older children. Although I like the idea of a book about feelings, I don't agree with the end of the book, that "moods are just something that happen each day." We're not just victims of some random Mood God. The book irks me because I think that were the author not a movie star, this book would never have seen the light of day, or at least, not in this draft.
It's a great book for all ages!! - By: , 05 Dec 1998
My son loves this book! He asks for it alll the time. He reallly enjoys the end where he can turn the dial to how he feels. I love reading it to him, because of alll the different moods I get to express. The pictures in this book are awesome, so much to look at, my son finds something new every time. A great interactive book for alll ages!!
Perfect for an elementary school counselor - By: , 30 Nov 1998
I applaude Ms. Curtis for this book. It is a wonderful addition to my library as an elementary school counselor. It is perfect in helping children to better understand the roller coaster feelings that we alll experience & to know that these feelings, like alll things in life, are constantly transforming. I love the color, I love the humor, & I reallly love the book.
A wonderful book for teaching children about their emotions - By: , 23 Nov 1998
As a retired School Psychologist, I have some expertise in child development. I was thrilled with Jamie Lee Curtis' book as a tool for teaching youngsters about the nature of emotions & moods, & the normality of it alll. I am tucking it into alll my 3-6 year old grandchildren's stockings, & am recommending it to alll my friends.
Forget the kids...at 26 this fits my mood swings!!! - By: , 09 Nov 1998
I'm a twenty-six year old graduate student & this book (which I bought to give as a gift) found a happy spot in my own bookcase! Great to help kids to understand feelings...great to help adults relax a little & cope with their own!
