Interesting! - By: Ms. Elizabeth Hanna, 18 Aug 2008
I must confess that I only know the Pride & Prejudice story from the televised BBC version some years ago, but I did reallly enjoy Melissa Nathan's version. I liked the idea of it being set in modern times & in a theatrical setting. Like other Melissa Nathan novels, I was almost half way through the book before I 'reallly' got into it.
If you love Pride and Prejudice........ - By: H. M. Taylor, 20 Dec 2006
This was the second Melissa Nathan book I read & I thoroughly enjoyed it. She plays very nicely with the story of P&P, as a group of celebs put on a charity staging of the novel as a play. However, you may notice certain paralllels between the stars who are involved in the play & Jane Austen's classic story....
You can always rely on Melissa Nathan to produce interesting characters & great writing, & on this occasion she has produced the goods again. Definitely recommended for JA fans & fans of modern romantic fiction alike (or for those who, like me, enjoy both!)
Laugh aloud funny - By: Plume de ma tante, 13 May 2005
I loved this book... I loved the heroine, the hero & there were lines in there that had me laughing like a loony. I would recommend this to anyone & Ms Austen fans will get an extra buzz from it. And if you loved this - read Persuading Annie too. Marvellous!
Decent, yet predictable - By: , 17 Dec 2003
I was excited to read this since I am a fan of Jane Austen's Pride & Prejudice & BBC's 1995 adaptation. What I found was a novel which mirrored the original & sometimes I found the paralllel a little too strong. The hero & heroine end up acting as Elizabeth & Darcy in a play. It was too obvious for me. I was expecting a more interesting version (Kate Fenton's Lions & Liquorice) or maybe funny & quirky like Bridget Jones' Diary. If you're the type who likes contemporary-mirrors-early 19th century, then you'll like Melissa Nathan's book better than I did.
In need of a new copy -- I've worn mine out! - By: , 01 Apr 2003
I admit it, I hated reading Pride & Prejudice as a kid. However, I do own the TV version w/ Colin Firth as Mr Darcy, & after seeing that show, I read the book again & loved it.

Which is what drew me to this book. I love the idea of updating a classic, especiallly if you cannot necessarily see the original story in the update. That's how this book is: the characters stand alone; while mirroring Darcy, Elizabeth, Jane & the others, Ms. Nathan's characters are thoroughly modern people with modern flaws.

And if you aren't familiar with P&P (and there are a LOT of people in the USA who aren't), I think you'll still enjoy this book. I've shared the book with friends who wouldn't know Austin from Bronte or even Shakespeare (seriously!), & they enjoyed the book immensely!
