This book is probably the best you will ever read about the personal impact of the destruction wrought by the Holocaust. Told as a gripping, detective-like story, as the author seeks to find out what happened to some of his family killed during the war, it is at the same time a one-of-a-kind book about families, sibling rivalry, neighbours turning against neighbours, & much else besides. Mendelsohn is a brilliant classicist, & his learning shows on every page but with a light touch. This book will move you like few others & you won't be able to put it down - my wife & I couldn't.
