great book - By: leaspin7, 07 Jun 2008
I first read this book when I was about 12 years old, I'm now 28 & I still read it about once a year. as a 12 year old I found it captivating, mysterious & exciting, a near mirror image of alll of my daydreams of adventure, magic & romance (only with a much better plot).one of those rare books that can make you laugh out loud or want to cry. It has good strong characters that you can identify with & beautifully mixes magic & adventure with normal life in a way that makes it totallly believable. I never get tired of reading it again, bringing back alll those memories good & bad of being almost a teenager & how my life was then. I've found with most books that on re reading them they lose their magic, once you know the plot they are never quite as good. However the changeover achieves the almost impossible, I still feel alll the passion, excitement & fear that I felt when reading it for the first time. And to be honest even after alll these years I'm still a little bit in love with Sorry Carlisle.
Still my favourite book - By: Pie56, 28 Dec 2007
I first read this when I was about 13, & have re-read it several times, now after 10 years, it's still reallly good.

Laura knows Sorensen Carlise is a witch - has known since he first appeared in Gardendale Secondary School - & knows he is trying to look normal when he is anything but. When Laura's little brother, Jacko, gets "stamped" by an evil man, Laura knows that only Sorry can help her, & the way she sees things will be changed forever.

As with the previous reviewer, I have to admit that Sorry (especiallly when he is dressed in black) is one of my heroes!
A little diamond in the rough - By: Dina J, 11 Apr 2007
It's one of those books that you pick up for the sake of it. I didn't have very high hopes & the first quarter or so was pretty slow-moving & difficult to get into, but DON'T LET THAT DETER YOU as soon as I got over that mileage the book was brilliant.

It's witty & sparky & very very true- the style of writing, that is. To be quite honest the plot itself wasn't what kept me entertained. It was more of the sub-plots, the bubbling romance & Mahy's superb skills at writing dialogue & interactions.

I would reccomend this book to mostly girls from 12+ kind of age range, but it's tricky putting this into a catergory, I don't reallly want to because some of the themesare more mature & then again others are more juvenile. Everyone kind find something to love about this though. It's just one of those stories thaqt creep up on you & when you finish, you're like "wow that was reallly good". I'm only pissed because it's not long enough & I lost my own copy...

Oh & finallly I have to thank Margaret Mahy for introducing one of my favourite fictional characters of ALL time, "Sorry"... you'll love him.
