Finally. Some action! - By: Mr. RCS Young, 06 Jun 2008
Let's face it, the Soldier Son trilogy hasn't been one of Robin Hobb's better attempts. It is overly long & rivals Stephen Donaldson for flawed self-loathing characters.
But. There are some great ideas in here & in this finale the series finallly takes off - sort of. It is still overly long & by no means fast paced but for those of us that have stuck with the series (perhaps despite their better judgement) it at least adds an insight into a very different & well explored culture (the Specks) as well as providing a conclusion to a story that would have made a decent series for two books but just couldn't support three.
I'm a big fan of Robin Hobb but this series suffered from the same issues as the Fool books - too much paralysis by self-analysis. There are major similarities between Fitz & Navare & one wonders if Hobb is beginning to run out of steam, or merely finds most enjoyment in torturing her characters as much as possible & seeing what comes out the other end?
I enjoyed this book. It had some of that read-late-in-to-the-evening excitement that has been so drasticallly missing from the previous two. Just not enough to save the series from being a bit of a let down for fans of her other works.
I'd highly recommend Hobb's other work, particularly the Assassin & Liveship Trader trilogies. This one is probably only for the devoted fan though she does have a marvellous way of exploring new/different civilisations.
nothing special - By: Rampant Rabbit, 07 May 2008
The final book in this trilogy is like the first two - confused & doesn't reallly go anywhere. I would not recommend this series, which is a real shame as other Robin Hobb books are generallly very good - in particular the Assassin's Quest series. I can't help wondering if the author is stuck in a rut trying to write stories about flawed characters but fails to develop the plot(s) adequately.
Soldier Son Trilogy - Very Disappointing - By: June Doyle, 31 Mar 2008
Be warned this paperback is large sized! Regular paperback size is not out until July 7th.
I haven't read this volume yet, but the first 2 in the series are a far cry from her other 3 trilogies which I loved. I will read it through & will post again if I'm doing her an injustice. Buy alll her other books but not this set.
