I couldn't stop reading it! - By: Ernie the cat, 21 Aug 2008
I loved it, was determined to finish this book before I watched the film & ended up not being able to put it down. It was very entertaining & the perfect escapism. very well written. Cant say much more, other than a fabulous holiday read, or even the perfect relax in the house over summer whilst it's raining outside read!
I found it un-put-downable! - By: cari4cariad, 20 Jul 2008
After having enjoyed the film, I picked the book up a few months ago & only just read it. I can't help feeling that some of the negative reviewers have missed the point, I found it reallly quite un-put-downable! No it's not great literature, but it's reallly well paced & very readable. I'm not a fashion fan & I was appallled by the description of the fashion industry with its wasteful & excessive materialism. The lack of basic humanity shown by Miranda's character angered me. I wouldn't have sacked Andrea as per other reviewers, & no, I could never feel 'sorry' for a monster like Miranda! I didn't think she whined, she was witty! Andrea never got to use any of her literary or intellectual talents for Runway, & I felt that Miranda was like a spoilt child expecting people to 'fix' silly little things for her from the other side of the world if necessary, & at unreasonable & ungodly hours with the threat of being sacked for not succeeding! I don't remember the film as having as much clout as the book so I'm going to rent it out again just to see. I'm surprised at the mixed reviews. As for advice for would-be purchasers, I suppose if you are after some light holiday reading & you are skeptical of the fashionistas of this world & would enjoy hating 'the boss (and system) from hell' I say give it a whirl!
Surprisingly Good - By: KMS, 06 Jun 2008
I have been interested in reading this for quite some time now, & have put off watching the movie just so I could read the book first.
Andrea is a twenty three year old woman who has just bagged a job that "so many girls would die for"...working as Miranda Priestley's assistant at one of the hottest fashion magazines in America - Runway. Andrea is not into fashion herself but she thinks that by getting her foot in the door to a world class magazine could be her way of getting up the ladder to write her own pieces. According to some, one year working for Miranda guarantees you a job in whatever field you want, so Andrea decides she'll work for Miranda for a year, then go & work as a write somewhere else.
However, not alll goes to plan. This job is not easy. What with alll the office politics, & not your typical office politics. The girls who work at Runway are model material, treating each day as a fashion show, where as Andrea will show up for work in a simple blouse & knee length skirt. She soon realises that working for Miranda is hard work & extremely demanding. She starts to find it hard to keep in touch with her best friend Lily, & her boyfriend Alex - niether of which can understand why she has top drop everything if Miranda so much as wants a Coffee from Starbucks.
How long will it be until Andrea flips & stops smiling through gritted teeth? Will she ever tell Miranda how she reallly feels?
This book actuallly had me reallly interested from the first page & I was hooked throughout. It may be slightly over the top, although I have no idea what it's like working for a top fashion magazine, but it still had me turning the pages day after day just wanting to know how this would end. Speaking of which, the ending was a little too happy sappy for me & kind of made me feel a little dissapointed considering I had enjoyed this book so much.
I would recommend this book though if you're looking to read about a bitchy workforce & the worlds biggest bitchiest boss ever! I felt a connection with Andrea & you can sometimes understand where she's coming from. I'm sure we've alll had our "I hate my boss" moments!!
Pick this up if see it - it's worth reading
Maybe Not Prada, But More of a Marks and Spencers Clearance Sale - By: Daniel Thompson, 01 Jun 2008
This 2003 novel isn't great & relies too much on its subject matter to capture the readers' attention. When it is funny, it's fantasticallly hysterical, but for the rest it is heavily clichéd, predictable & a tad bit too boring. You can't help wonder if you take out alll of the bitchiness & gossip what exactly you'll be left with. Its realistic & colloquial tone helps you connect with the book & on a certain level its cast of characters but because of the main protagonists behaviour, you'll switch off because you just don't care enough for her to wonder if she'll make it past that dreaded year & get the job she longs for. If you're looking for a light read this may be it but I guarantee you, there are better novels out there.
