We took this out from the library over & over for a year before we realised we reallly ought to be buying it. So we did, & we bought a few for presents, too. What a brilliant book! It's full of factoids, things to do, legends, pics, a bit of everything. Some of the ideas are so simple, but making shell jewellery, tracking snails or cave painting a rock or walll with home-made ochre & charcoal make plastic toys look so stupid. Geoff Sample is a real naturalist & you get the impression that he has tried alll these things with his own kids. The book comes in a nice plastic cover, but I wish it would lie a little flatter. However, what a bargain at the price. Every family with primary school kids ought to have this book -- that is, if they or their kids are interested in nature. When I was 11 I started buying the Observer's Books; that was exciting for me, then, but oh how I would have adored this.
