This book is an entertaining & enjoyable series of descriptions -almost anecdotes - about hermits across the ages. My favourites are the stylites (who live on pillars) & dendrites (who live in trees). It also contains discursions on the role of hermits in religion, & the nature of the contemplative life. All in alll, a learned & most entertaining read.
