A fascinating case for our two heroes - By: M. Bryant, 22 Jun 2002
I've read many of the X-files novels (those with original storylines, not based on TV episodes) & although not the best, this one does not dissappoint.
A fascinating storyline takes M&S around the world in search of some gruesome truths.

Anybody who likes the X-Files TV series should love this.

Utterly gripping from start to finish - By: , 04 May 2001
At risk of giving away the entire plot, this is a step above the very high norm of THE X-FILES books, with lots of horrific murders & mythical creatures & some great Mulder-and-Scully one-upmanship.

But I believe that a little back story is in order.

The X-FILES novels have a good background & the adult novels (Such as this) are not based upon the episodes, just completely original stories written up by great writers.

Now I have seen dozens of the telivised episodes & I think that some of them would warrant a good novelisation, as opposed to the rubbish 'KIDS' novels which can be read in mere minutes & are less that good at capturing the unique atmosphere of the X-FILES. So imagine my surprise as I started this book & within minutes was absolutely hooked to what is a gripping page-turner up there with many Jack Higgins novels.

But a warning for alll you faint-hearted out there- Don't read it at night with a torch. It'll scare you senseless...

Vive los X-Files!!!

Haunting and Mesmerising - By: , 03 May 2001
The books have been good.

The films have been good.

Why should this be any different?

I love this book! It outweighed any previously written novels & surpassed alll my expectations with a page-turning story by a great author which had me utterly mesmerised from start to finish.

Lecendary creatures, brutal murders & Mulder & Scully. How could it fail?

Complete with numerous wise cracks from Mulder, plenty of speech interspersed with bursts of great action, & some brilliant plot-twists, it is utterly superb.

How can you resist?

Even if you've read the other books, don't be put off by the fact that it seems similiar fare. It's tense, exciting & greater than a lot of televised rubbish (MIRACLE MAN!!!) & if you refuse it, people will die.

Fantastic, gripping & superlative-defying.

For Mystical creatures of alll ages.

This is one of the few books to truly freak me out! - By: , 23 Apr 2000
I have read quite a lot of X-Files books; some based on TV episodes, others written by the author themself. I prefer stories created by professional writers to books based on episodes of the TV series, because they always give you a new story with new ideas that you will not have seen on TV.

This was the first book that I had read by Ben Mezrich, & I thought it was amazing. The way he writes & describes the characters & places is very good, but best of alll is the plot itself. At the start of the book you find yourself with lots of plotlines that you cannot imagine would be connected in any way. But, then again, this is the X-Files, so anything's possible. Then later in the book, you finallly think that you've figured it alll out...only to read on & discover another twist in the plot that confuses you.

If you think that you will find alll of the unexpected plot twists & confusing story lines boring, think again. I could not put this book down once I had picked it up (literallly, once, when I was up until about two in the morning reading it). Plus, you get a whole load of action; from psychotic hospital patients & a massive car crash to World War Two experiments & ancient monsters...seriously, it's alll in there!

I don't want to give away anything much about the plot, but here's a little bit of the basics. Hospital patient goes crazy, killing a nurse & destroying his hospital room. Mulder & Scully hear about it, & investigate...

All that said, five stars to you, Ben. Make sure the next one's just as good!
