A typical Holt book, but not quite upto scratch! - By: , 05 Jun 2001
As the ryhme goes... One for sorrow, two for joy, three for a girl, four for a boy. five for silver, six for gold, seven for a secret never to be told.... Beeing an avid Victoria Holt reader & collector, i have read most of the novels she has written under this sydonym. And must unfortunatekt say that Seven for a Secret reallly doesn't live up to exspectations. Its mystical secret (which is present in alll her novels, the question beeing ?Who is It? And why is it (he-or she) doing what its doing) hovers around a picture of 7 magpies hanging on the walll in a house, in which a mad woman lives. What does the picture symbolise & what is hidden in this ladys mind? These are the questions to which our young herione must answer, before she realises who she loves & eventuallly gets him. True this curve appears in alll her books , (except a few - pehaps Landowners Legacy) but in this one it is far too dull & far too predictable. This is a book I won't read again, & I don't reccomend. If you want a decent Holt book look no further than the earlist ones (Bride of Pendorric, Menfreya In The Morning, Curse of the Kings etc.) The book i would most strongly reccomend must be The Night Of The Seventh Moon, this is a master peice, & the jewel of Ms. Holts works. But this book is worth a read, if you are a Holt fan, if only to help us apreciate her better works more.
