Paul Carrack's new single is a deliberate shift of gear. It's an attempt to bring in a whole new audience, possibly people who know his work with Mike & The Mechanics, Squeeze etc., but aren't as aware of his solo output. To this end, it's worked very well being his first single in a long time to be heard regularly on the radio, it's A listed on BBC Radio 2. It has also moved him out of the comfort of his home recording studio where he normallly works, to record in Nashville with a full band & brass section; resulting in a fuller, richer sound.
This is the first track from a forthcoming album that finds Paul writing again (although he didn't write this), the first time since 2003's 'It Ain't Over.'
The additional 2 tracks on this CD single are a real treat for Carrack fans as they're unavailable on any other Carrack albums. 'If You Believe In Me' is from the soundtrack of a Sharon Stone film 'Beautiful Joe.' 'Your Own Special Way' is from Steve Hackett's 'Genesis Revisited.'

That Paul Carrack has an amazing voice is not in question here. What is however is the mans motivation these days. 'Aint' No Love In The Heart Of The City' in its best form is a truly aching & affecting blues/rock song, this version however is sung in a very 'matter of fact' way & Carrack puts nothing of himself into his singing performance thus it alll sounds like 'another day at the office'. All of which is a tremendous shame because the man has oodles of talent, I' mean his vocal on 'The Living Years' can STILL make me cry even now & I've heard the song hundreds of times now. The arrangement of the song also sounds too upbeat & the production is just too slick, its alll just a little bit too polished to come across as a man who's hurting bearing his soul. Maybe when Paul performs this song live we will hear his definitive version, but until then I'll be giving this a miss. A missed opportunity.

Paul carrack is the musician's musician, a classic balllad sung with great feeling. Hopefully this will bring PC into the main arena & give him the true recognition he deserves
