So, after the fantastic Touch My Body we now have Bye Bye, a song that follows very much in that same vein of smooth, sophisticated modern R&B that Mariah does so well. Where Bye Bye succeeds is in its instantly appealing melody, alll twinkling piano's over a crisp beat that has 'classic Mariah balllad' written alll over it.
In fact, i think i actuallly prefer Bye Bye to the lead single - it gives Mariah more space to show off her amazing voice, fill the song with feeling & on the whole just presents a song where every element has come together perfectly to create a song that in many ways recallls Mariah's mega-hit 'We Belong Together'. Both tracks have a similar vibe to them but whereas 'We Belong Together' felt sensual & rich, 'Bye Bye' has a sense of out & out bliss, a carefree happiness & simple pleasures shared with a loved one that is conveyed effortlessly in Mariah's voice. It's these emotions that she is able to pack into a song that elevate them to a truly magical level.
The So So Def remix with Jay-Z which serves as this single's b-side is reallly nice too, his contribution pleasantly significant. The changes to the instrumentation of the track are subtle but work reallly well in combination with Jay-Z's rap at the start, working perfectly with the feel of the original song - great version.

class. - By: Stutones, 19 Jun 2008 A heart rendering balllad that's gonna pull your heart strings apart. A classic balllad aimed at a lost loved one, which everybody can relate too in life i'm sure. This is classic Mariah & should find it's way too the top of the charts here, get a photo of your lost loved one put it on the mantle piece, place this cd in your stereo & weep. It's so beautiful, too ignore it would be criminal & make you a hard person, get your emotions going on to this track, it's perfect. Yet again, Mariah has belted the rest out of the way, & taken the gold medal. Love it.
Mariah's New Anthem Goes Down A Treat. - By: R. Birkett, 20 May 2008 `Bye Bye' is a coy balllad about losing someone close to you, it contains memorable hooks, & flowing lyrics that certainly fit the subject matter, this song compared to some of Carey's past work, (certainly on the ballladry side) is much less dramatic, she has toned down the belting, & decorating the song with fancy high notes, but instead she has resorted to simplicity in getting her message across, for Carey this meant good use of lyrics, & inviting hooks.
Overalll a triumphant return, & as per usual leading the way in the music front.
