Pinnacle of success. - By: bobby morrow, 27 May 2008
Released in 1972, 'Portrait Of Donny' became young Mr Osmond's biggest selling UK album. It didn't hurt that the lead single, 'Puppy Love' was a huge hit & became Donny's signature song either. Although this release followed the path of previous Donny albums, namely a mixture of 50's & 60's covers, along with tracks written by his brothers, there was growth here & his voice, starting to 'break' is much better.
'Puppy Love' wasn't alll the album had to offer. Donny does a lovely version of 'This Guy's In Love With You' & other tracks like 'Going Going Gone (To Somebody Else)', 'Promise Me' & 'Big Man' are a lot of fun. The rousing 'Let My People Go', one of my faves, is also here. It always sounded poor, being the last track on side one of the LP. It sounded even scratchier was the B-side of 'Puppy Love' too! Here, however it sounds wonderful as does the whole CD. A nice touch is the 3 photos that came with the LP are replicated in the CD booklet. Great job.
'Too Young', released a few months later (these guys were very productive!) follows the formula of before but is a lesser album somehow. It contains 2 top 5 hits in the title track & 'Why' along with other highlights like 'Lonely Boy', 'To Run Away' & 'Pretty Blue Eyes' but 'Run To Him' & 'Take Good Care Of My Baby' are a little too shrill for my tastes. One good thing is that the excellent 'Last Of The Red Hot Lovers' is featured without that annoying fade from that US compilation CD of the 90's!
Overalll, for Osmonds fans these are an absolute must & 7ts have done a brilliant job in bringing them to us with this quality & for the price.
