It's really not good enough - By: Mr. D. J. Reeve, 06 Jul 2008
I have tried to like it, listened to it again & again but I'm sorry, it's just OK. Adam's voice sounds soulless like he is strolling through the songs & not feeling them & in the end the division of rock & country as oppose to a normal track listing just makes it boring. They're my favourite band in the world but seem to be running out of ideas. My wife is a massive fan & she fell asleep half way through!
A great return - even if it takes a few plays - By: N. A. Warbis, 12 May 2008
Counting Crows are probably my favourite band & are, in my opinion, are also one of the most underrated bands on the planet so you can hardly expect this to be a balanced review. I would rate alll of their albums as five star although I would need a couple more star to rate August & Everything After, so you can imagine my expectations of this return album after so long out of the studio.
Was I disappointed? Initiallly I was - to some extent. I thought the album was good but I wasn't blown away as I had hoped to be. Rather than writing a review on this basis I decided to persevere & see if the album grew on me & I'm glad to say that it did - big time! After a dozen or so plays I reallly think this rates a close second to `August' & has some reallly great songs on it. My particular favourites are Cowboys, Anyone But You & On a Tuesday in Amsterdam Long Ago alll of which are the equal of anything the band has ever produced. As for the other 12 tracks - they're alll almost as good.
So, if you love Counting Crows but haven't bought this yet - do! If you have bought it & have abandoned it after a couple of plays give it another try. It may be a slow burner but it's reallly worth the effort.
Disappointed! - By: The Big G, 06 May 2008
First of alll - I loved the last album "Hard Candy" so I guess I was expecting too much...but as one of the few last great American bands still playing was it reallly too much to hope for something better than we got??? The track "Hanging Tree" may just be the worst track I've ever heard by anyone. Ever. It's just soooooooooo bad............
Good- but not great - By: Sohail, 05 May 2008
After alll the over-excited reviews here I was expecting something more than what I actuallly got. The album isn't bad but don't expect anything like their old stuff. Some of the tracks are ok.. but the rest seem like fillers to me..
Not a patch on their old stuff - By: R. Lambert, 02 May 2008
I know you are going to buy this album because I suspect that most counting crows (CC) fans are fans they gathered from their first two albums (August & Everything After & Recovering the Satelites).
Therefore go ahead a buy the album & add it to your cc album collection. That is what I did. The fact this album is extremely poor & dissapointing will have nothing to do with your purchase. Your a fan, you will have to buy it.
If you are new to the CC then I suggest you buy any other album but this one.
It is awful. There are no decent tunes, no harmony, no rhythms & the lyrcis are dreadful. not what we expect from CC. This is like a poor tribute band trying to write their own songs. What happened to the often witty, frequently painful yet mesmerising lyrics from their early stuff. What happened to the emotional music that accompanied the lyrics, the great tunes, the gentle melodies? Where has it gone.
After 6 years this record is nothing but a huge dissappointment for true CC fans. Try harder next time please cos we want more good stuff. Not this.
As a true CC fan though, you are still going to buy the album though. Listen to it a few times, try to make your mind up about it, then shelve it/store it never to be listened to again.
