Classic Funk and Italo Disco revisited. - By: Doctor Trance, 07 Apr 2008
This is a very groovy & smoothly mixed, retro dance entry in the Back to Mine series, & in my opinion, one of the best I've heard yet. The tracks in this mix range from 1973 to 1985. They touch on late 70's disco & funk, & early to mid 80's italo disco.
Interest in italo disco has peaked lately, with this Röyksopp mix, another retro mix callled Hellboys, & a handful of new artists such as those featured on After Dark, who are creating new sounds molded from the past. Röyksopp has definitely touched alll their Italo Disco bases, by including some of the most popular tracks of this early to mid 80's European genre: Mr. Flagio's Take A Chance, Valerie Dore's Get Closer, & Klein & M.B.O.'s Dirty Talk.
They start out the mix with the kooky sounds of The Talking Heads; dive into some Italo & standard disco grooves; throw in only 2 tracks from this decade (one is their own track, Meatballl, under the Emmanuel Splice alias); & finish with some turn taking between italo disco & some late 70's funk. It's a well rounded & perfect trip back in time through disco, funk, & alll it's groovy origins.
I want to also note that the back of the CD incorrectly numbers the tracks. Due to two tracks spliced together & taking up track spots 5 & 6, they did not give them each a number & list them both within track 5, so tracks 6-19 on the back of the CD are actuallly 7-20 on the disc itself.
No...No...No - By: A. I. Chahian, 17 Jan 2008
Terrible...terrible album...
I think it might have been my high expectations, but I just hated it. As soon as I heard that naff 80's italian tune I knew it was alll going Pete Tong.
Try it out yourself, & hopefully you'll enjoy it.
Unfortunately I cannot rescue one track from this album, it's just a waste of money.
Good mix but.... - By: Mr. Paul English, 19 Sep 2007
...shame about the sound quality. This is mixed at quite a low volume which compares unfavourably with other instalments in the series.
Cosmic Disco! - By: D Kincaid, 09 Jun 2007
Hmmm, some mixed reviews going on here. I'd disagree that this mix is straight 'funk' & strongly disagree with the whole of the first 1 star review. OK some of the mixing is awkward, the first mix out of Talking Heads in particular, after that the whole shebang improves rapidly & look at the quality of the tracklisting! Its got Mr Flagio's 'Take A Chance' on it - a fantastic trippy slice of Italian space disco, its got the heavenly 'Dirty Talk' by Klein & MBO which I challlenge anyone who claims to have ears not to love & its got the mighty SUPERMAX on it! A guy in body armor & shoulderpads who looks like Thor making psychedelic synth disco! The guy is a legend! So a big thumbs up to Royksopp for assembling an eclectic selection of quality underground cosmic disco!
Poor quality control - By: A. McMahon, 16 May 2007
Oh dear, this is a lazy, badly mixed sorry excuse of an album, the mixing is quite frankly atrocious. Most of the tracks are cheesy rubbish that badly rip of other much better tracks that inspired them. The Talking Heads & Idris Muhammed tracks are the only things worth listening to, although badly butchered, I doubt many would have heard Could Heaven Ever Be Like This before which is probably why previous reviewers have rated this album so highly. It is a great track but it is available in its full version elsewhere. Which is where I'd recommend anyone going rather than buy this cd, it's only fit for a coaster. Back To Mine & Late Night Tales are usuallly pretty good for digging up hidden gems, but this is by far the worst I've yet heard. Try Another Late Night by Fila Brasilia or Jarvis Cocker's The Trip instead if you haven't done already.
