who needs "the tears?" - By: M. J. Farnworth, 12 Feb 2008
Returning repeatedly to this album over many weeks & months & it still hold up. Initiallly the idea of Brett solo album pales slightly against the low rent glamour & the iconic duo of anderson/butler's 90's heavy weight masterpieces, too many too mention. It could have been a desperate last resort exercise finallly showing up Anderson as a fraud or exposed without Marr or Ronson i.e. Butler), or even the photogenic "men in black" era with then new boys oakes & codling. This sounds like a lifetime since those glory days of 92-94. Still "Scorpio Rising" is a near colossus of a tune, dramatic & melancholic. "Love is Dead" evokes a classic feel of Roxy Music to Morrissey-esque lyrics that Suede post Butler years could never do.

On this album Brett wrote the album with a keyboard player. This gives a different feel more muted than any guitar influenced Suede album. Neither is the ghost of virtuoso/riffing style of Bernard's playing here. Or no tracks that stand out as chart hits here. Just one of the most celebrated artists of the 90s with possibly the best vocal performance ever. He might be consigned to the times by most (LIKE BOWIE IS TO THE 70S!) but this is easily his best work since "Coming Up".
Dull, dull dull...... - By: Dr. DA Gibson, 16 Dec 2007
Bought this having read alll the reviews stating that it had a very different tempo & mood to previous Suede albums - they were correct on alll counts apart from the one saying that it was any good. Mediocre ad trite in the extreme with lyrics penned by a teenager - avoid!!

As a Suede fan from "The Drowners" to the rather sad end that was "A New Morning", I was rather reluctant to buy this after the scathing NME review. BUT, after fallling for the Acoustic Live CD (something about limited edition runs of 1500), I once again realised that you shouldn't always trust the reviewers.
This is a great album, follows on from the second half of "Dog Man Star", orchestral, moving & cohesive in a way CD's seldom are these days. Highlights abound, & check out "Acoustic Live" on ConcertLive.com which is a fabulous live acoustic set of new & old.
