Superb studio-quality live album - By: Samildanach Emrys, 17 Nov 2006
The first thing that should be pointed out about this album is it's live. I mention this first because I didn't realise when I bought it. However, that's not a problem, as you'll see.
The clarity of sound on this album is remarkable; it's completely free of the fuzz & murk that is characteristic of live recordings, & the band's performance itself is note-perfect. In terms of recording & performance quality, this is first rate.
Now onto Kamelot themselves. If you're unfamiliar with the band, you should be made aware that they're a power metal band. Maybe this has already sent you running for the hills, but bear with me. Now, this being the first Kamelot album I've heard (though it won't be the last) I'm by no means an expert, but if the selection of songs on here is at alll representative, their music is of a high quality indeed. The singer has a powerful & versatile voice, & is able to pronounce the lyrics (poor pronunciation is sadly a common flaw with power metal bands. Not a major issue, but slightly irksome.). The musicianship is excellent, & the songs themselves are both stirring & catchy while remaining free of the pompous cheese factor with which some bands are afflicted. 'Shadow of Uther' & 'The Fourth Legacy', in particular, nestled into my brain very quickly & forced me to hum them for days afterwards. It's also worth noting that Kamelot's songs feature distinct variations in rhythm, tempo & melody, neatly avoiding repetitiveness.
In short, Kamelot have excellent songs & the talent to do justice to the songs in a live setting, & this is further augmented by the superb clarity of the recording.
If you want quality, cheese-free power metal, you won't go wrong with this album, whether or not you're already familiar with Kamelot. Even if you don't usuallly listen to power metal, this album could possibly convert you.
BEST METAL BAND SINCE ICED EARTH - By: , 04 Nov 2000
I had only heard one Kamelot song before ("The Expedition (live)" - taken from this record) & it alone was enough to convince me to buy this record. Everything about it ROCKS! If you've never heard any of their work before (or even if you have) this is definitely a CD well worth checking out. From the first bars of "Until Kingdom Come", I knew this album was going to rock. This band has amazing strength in its song-writing & playing - Thom's guitarwork & the drumming are awesome, & Kahn's vocals are rather reminiscent of DiamondHead's Sean Harris, if not even stronger. Kamelot are, in my opinion, probably the best metal band (definitely the best US band) to emerge since Iced Earth (who are easily my most favourite band EVER - you should definitely check these guys out!) Interestingly, both bands hail from Tampa, Florida, & both record at the same studio (sometimes)... could there be a connection? The only dissapointing thing about this record is its length. After Iced Earth's 3-CD 3-hour release "Alive In Athens", anything less always leaves you feeling a little empty. Still, it's enough to make me want to check out alll of Kamelot's previous works.
