Put the Man back on top - By: Pete M, 02 Jun 2008
The only reason I am writing this review is to raise the stars rating. Yes Van has put out numerous Greatest hits over the years, but hey he's been around for years... this compilation differs as do they alll, but paradoxicallly has a number of tracks featured else where, the crux is would you want a album collection to miss out on those classics.
This record is worthwhile for "Comfortably Numb" alone, there is not another soul on Earth who could pull off the vocals on this iconic Track (The emphasis on Soul).
Well done Van, you are "The Man"
Poetic champion goes erratically to the movies - By: jayhikkss, 24 Mar 2007
"At the Movies" collects 19 Morrison tracks that have featured - more or less prominently - in various soundtracks. The recordings span Morrison's whole career from "Gloria" (1965) to a surprise, but excellent, 2006 cover of Pink Floyd's "Comfortably Numb" (from Scorcese's Oscar winning "The Departed".) Of course, many of his songs from other flicks are left out.
Although any compilation from such a major creator is bound to include a lot of excellent music, I see it primarily as an ingenious - but at the same time dubious - attempt to present the public with still another greatest hits package of sorts. However, four of the tracks are not the familiar studio takes but live recordings.
As a Van Morrison fan from the first hour, I cannot reasonably recommend this set to anybody (except to the completist).
However, if you are new to Van Morrison's music & have bought this CD, there is much here that you will enjoy.
But should you still have to commit yourself to the purchase of a compilation, I would recommend "The Best of Van Morrison" released by Polydor in remastered version in 1998 (although this one does not include any post 1989 material.)
One that got away - By: RONAN O'CALLAGHAN, 09 Mar 2007
Not exactly reviewing what's here but can't help noting a missed opportunity....the use in the movie Moonlight Mile of the little known gem I'll Be Your Lover Too from the album Van Morrison, His Band & the Street Choir was so striking I found myself mentioning it to several people. The song would have been a great choice for this compilation.
