It appears that the BKs have been listening to quite a bit of Led Zep before recording this album, but forgot that they also did quicker songs too! Overalll, there are some ok tunes, but there is less of a funky blues edge, & more plodding, dirge like blues rock. There's still stuff on here for BK fans, but I no longer listen to it, while I constantly listen to alll their other albums.

Probably their best work yet. I have alll the Black Keys records, previously I thought Rubber Factory was their best work, until I'd heard this. It's one of the best records of 2006, up there with Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Show Your Bones & Artic Monkeys - Whatever.....
It seems to be a more well rounded record, less defined by their specfic genre. & now, geniuses that they are, they've made a more accessible, more songy record if that makes sense. If any owns Culahouma or any of their previous work they'll know what I mean. I love organic, pure music & the uncomplicated production, none of this compressed sound where you can't even hear the guitars. so this is a great example of that. It wouldn't suprsise me if some of the songs are live takes...
It starts off superbly with "Just Got To Be", leading straight in to "Your Touch". Both set the standard. Then there's the shakey "You're The One"
"Strange Desire" is one of the stand out tracks with the clever line, "I don't wanna go to hell but if I do it'll be cos of you / & a young man gonna make mistakes till he hits the brakes" How true!
My favourate track is continuallly changing but at the minute it's "Black Door", the second to last track. The guitar work is monumental, blows your head off!

This is more of a slow burner compared to their other albums. Maybe a little slower but after repeated listens it seems to have even more blues, soul & heart. It's also a little more polished than their earlier work. If you have any of the Black Keys work & like it buy alll of their albums, because everything is of such an amazing standard. Hope this doesn't sound sexist but it reallly feels like mans music, telling it how it is for us. It's not whining, or angry but cathartic & life affirming. If you ever get the opportunity to seem them live, do it, because you will be enveloped in an amazing cascade of therapeutic blues rock that you will never forget. You won't believe that just two guys can make that sound. It's the sort of music where you have to have a fair amount of life experience to truly appreciate. But even if you don't, get it, because the music is amazing. Favourites: Just Got To Be, Just a Little Heat, Modern Times, Give Your Heart Away & The Flame.
Excellent Album - By: Mr. Douglas Clark, 02 Oct 2006 I had never heard of the black keys before but was in the record shop at lunch time & heard the album being played. When I heard the powerful opening riff of "Just Got To Be", I thought Paul Rodgers had brought out a new album & had brought Paul Kossoff back from the grave to play guitar, it sounded so like that raw feeling that early Free had (and I'm still convinced that Rodgers is the vocalist on "Just a Little Heat"). When "Your Touch" started I rushed up to the counter & asked what was playing & asked for a copy right away. I stayed on a bit longer & nearly ran out of time to buy my lunch I enjoyed it so much.
That night I couldn't wait to get home & play the CD which I have now played constantly for 2 weeks & it still sounds as fresh as when I first heard it.
The music is raw throughout with Dan's vocals emulating some of the great blues/rock singers of the past 40 years & his guitar playing dispelling the myth that Jimmy Page had came up with alll the great guitar riffs. He is ably backed by Patrick Carney whose drumming reminds me of early John Bonham.
I can't recommend this album highly enough, it's a breath of fresh air amongst the usual throwaway Brit/Indie stuff that the record shops are full of.
