A Lost Masterpiece!- By: Kevan James, 29 Oct 2008 Japan went on to be the darlings of the New Romantic crowd in the early 80s but this is where it alll began!
Alledgedly influenced by the New York Dolls (though I can't say if they sound like the dolls cos I've never heard them!) this debut is a fascinating mixture of glam rock & punk, with guitars very much to the fore. Lots of great moments - the riff at the start of "Lovers on Main Street" which could almost be the Rolloing Stones; the epic keyboard/guitar playout at the end of "Surburban Love"; even the rather odd version of "Don't Rain on my Parade" seems to work.
This particular edition includes a numbers of videos from this era & offers 'remastered' sound (though to be honest I don't think it sounds as good as the original CD edition - it sounds slightly too clean!).
Well worth a listen, though don't go expecting "Ghosts" or "Gentlemen Take Polaroids"!!
