There's a certain & very warm feeling which runs through you when you hear any one of The Walker Brothers hits from the 60's. Maybe it was the orchestration, or the BIG production, but it was their trademark, like how your ears immediately prick up when you hear the trumpet right at the beginning of 'The Sun Ain't Gonna Shine Anymore' & you get goosebumps alll over. Their voices & the backing just have that effect, & the girls' at school used to swoon over them as if they were The Beatles. They toured a great deal & played Bournemouth Winter Gardens with Jimi Hendrix on the same bill, & that's how I happened to see them back in their hey-day. There isn't a bad track on here, but those old singles just take the edge over the other tracks.
Classic sixties pop music - By: Peter Durward Harris, 02 Mar 2005 The Walker brothers were not brothers at alll - they were actuallly Scott Engel, Gary Leeds & John Maus. Once they adopted their chosen group name, they dropped their own surnames & became Scott, Gary & John Walker. Unable to make it in their American homeland, they relocated to England, where they became successful alll over Europe, although they had far more hits in the UK than anywhere else. They sang pop balllads superbly, though they could pick up the tempo enough to provide variation.
Their biggest hits were Make it easy on yourself (a Bacharach-David song) & The sun ain't gonna shine anymore (a Four seasons song, never released as a single by them). Both those songs were number one hits in the UK, also reaching the top twenty in America. My ship is coming in, a number three UK hit provided their only other (minor) American hit.
Of their other UK hits, the biggest were No regrets (7), Another tear fallls (12), You don't have to tell me (13) & a Scott solo, Lights of Cincinatti (13),
Other tracks include Jackie, If you go away (both Jacques Brel songs translated into English), Joanna (another Scott solo, written by Tony Hatch & Jackie Trent, better known via Petula's sixties hits) & We're alll alone (a Boz Scaggs song that provided Rita Coolidge with a UK hit).
This collection contains alll the essentials, but I bought this many years ago only to feel it wasn't enough. I eventuallly bought the double CD, Singles plus. If you are sure you only want a single CD, buy this - if in doubt, buy Singles plus.
DEFINITELY THE BEST - By: cjj@bun.com, 13 Aug 2000 A great selection of tracks from the best boy band of the 60`s. with well known hit songs such as their 1st hit "Make It Easy On Yourself" which reached no 1 in 1965. the evergreen "The Sun Ain`t Gonna Shine Anymore" the Romantic "1st Love Never Dies" "My Ship Is Coming In" & lots more. Then there is afew of Scotts solo hits that he made in the late 6o`s such as the brooding "Joanna" & "The Lights Of Cininatti" & "Jackie". Listening to these songs, the awesome voice of Scott Walker still manages to send a shiver down my spine! This C.D. is deinitely a must for any fans of The Walker Brothers & even if you arn`t, you could be converted after listening to it!
