Nina tackled the Blues and Won. Awesome. - By: M. Shankland, 02 Sep 2007
Five stars, definitely. Recorded in 1964 & 1965 during Nina Simone's classic New York days, Nina takes on the blues & wins. Opening with 'Be My Husband' recently revived by Anthony & the Johnsons, showing Nina wrestling with alll the complexities that can appear even in the most mundane human relationships. Followed by a rousing version of Bessie Smith's 'Nobody Knows You When You're Down & Out'. Another highlight must be 'Strange Fruit' , the well known standard about Klu Klux Klan lynching, & made famous by Billie Holiday, & covered magnificently. Goodness knows this track has been treated to some poor covers , so a relief to hear that its harrowing potency was kept well by Nina Simone. 'Tell Me More & More & Them Some' ( another Billie Holiday number) is chilling & brooding , with some spectacular vocals & keyboards. The release ends with a rousing version of ' Sinnerman', confrontational edgy Gospel, ten minutes . The CD reallly is awesome & far too short at just under thirty six minutes ( with nine tracks) , but the amount of emotional energy that Nina just poured into the blues is demonstrated well.

And they say that Michael Buble and Joss Stone sing the blues????!! - By: Florence Donovan, 26 Sep 2006
This is one of the very best albums I own. On first listen (and even second & third and...) you may think "yeah nice but I dont get any melody or hum along stuff except for sinnerman" But it is one of those exceptional pieces of work that touches you more & more, the more you listen- & there is also THAT VOICE- corny but true. BUY IT NOW.
