Good for the series, bad outside - By: Niels Kristian Schmidt, 12 Jan 2008
This is a loyal soundtrack. Loyal to the series. But outside, the tunes working so excellent in the series, become dead music hard to relate to for me personallly. Not exciting or entertaining to listen to. Needs the images of the series to work well. And there it works well, & that is why I bought it.
Spellbinding - By: Mr. Warren M. Fisher, 01 Oct 2007
Bear McCreary's score for season one of BG builds on the stellar work of Richard Gibbs in the pilot. He utilises the style & motifs of Gibbs (eastern modalities & instrumentation, driving percussion & soaring soprano alll set to orchestra & synth), & goes further, opening out the range & introducing his own touches - celtic horns, martial drummimg & most strikingly McCreary's own nascent Glass-y minimalism.
Dark, haunting & compelling the is a real six star score & marks Bear McCreary out as one of the most gifted young composers working on film or TV.
"You are to be the protector of the next generation of god's children Gaius." - By: S. D. J. Parry, 14 Apr 2007
It's not until you play this soundtrack that you realise how much of the Battlestar universe is intertwined with the excellent music of Bear McCreary. Having worked with Richard Gibbs on the music for the mini series, Bear treats us to over 70 minutes of music from season 1 of the show.
This CD comprises the bulk of the music from the first season & covers the essential elements that make up the core of the show.
Using a variety of instruments from many countries, McCreary once again delivers an orchestral soundstage that you'd only usuallly get in movies.
There are some subtle pointers in some tracks that are fleshed out into great examples of leit motif for certain characters & they are expanded upon on the season 2 soundtrack.
The music is moving (Passacaglia - my favourite), dramatic (Battle On The Asteroid), humourous (The Dinner Party) & haunting (Bloodshed).
There is also both versions of the opening theme, the US version & the UK version. The US version is a more military style & was used in the flashback sequences from Act Of Contrition but the UK version sounds much better & in feeling with the show giving a more dramatic impact to the listener.
All in alll any fan of Battlestar Galactica, new or old, should own this soundtrack & for those out there who just like excellent music then it's a safe bet that you'll like this CD!
if you loved the series then you'll love the soundtrack. - By: C. D. Mitchell, 01 Mar 2006
This soundtrack is amazing. The music is nothing like your bog standard sci-fi soundtrack with their big brass sections & triumphant themes. the composer Bear Mcreary uses percussion instruments exceptionallly well. he also uses alot of ethnic instruments, irish instruments & haunting vocals to create a beautiful fusion of different cultures. it also prvides insight into the world with translations to some of the vocals. In short buy even if you're just a fan of good music.
as good the miniseries music! - By: doike, 17 Aug 2005
It's an absolutely MUST for any BSG fan, & it's also a very pleasant surprise for those who love scores. Both UK & US opening themes are included (and that's reallly good), & 70 minutoes of great & ecclectic music.
THE SHAPE OF THINGS TO COME is great & there are lots of great themes of alll the episodes.
Bear MacCreary goes far beydond the premise of the miniseries & he surprises us with alll-new themes
