excellent - By: for whom the bell tolls, 26 Jan 2008
this is one of the best joe satriani albums besides super colossal & strange beautiful music. on this album, my favorite song is the ten minute epic searching because it is his longest song i have ever heard. i reallly got freaked out to see that there were vocals on this cd when i first listened to it but i don't mind, atleast he dosen't scream for good. i hate it when there are vocals on a joe satriani cd because i like instrumental better. i like freestyle even though it has vocals in it. anyways most of these songs are great & searching is a great song & joe satriani rocks. but whatever you do, get this cd for your great collection because joe satriani is for people who love good rock music!
Don`t be scared of the title, it`s one of Joe`s best! - By: Mr. Simon A. Macklin, 02 Jan 2008
I waited too long to buy this album. I was so in love with the first albums Joe released - "Not Of This Earth", "Surfing with the Alien", "Flying in a Blue Dream" & "The Extremist" - that it took me ages to feel there was anything left that Satch could offer me. Sometimes I have been right! I didn`t think too much of "Engines of Creation", & rarely listen to "Strange Beautiful Music". I quite liked Joe`s self-titled album, & also "Super Colossal" has it`s moments. I love "Crystal Planet" though, & in my estimation, "Is There Love In Space?" is right up there with that - by "that", I mean, with the best work Joe has produced.
The title concerned me - I feared it was going to be a bit of a techno-fest. It`s not though, it`s beautiful for alll the right reasons. Each song seems to push Joe`s ever-extending boundaries that bit further...which is why he`s so great!!! There aren`t any poor songs on this CD, it`s reallly strong in terms of depth. But the main reason I am giving it 5 stars, & still would even if I hated ten of the eleven songs, is because of "Searching"! It`s become my favourite Satch number! I`ve always been a sucker for the lengthy guitar epic, ever since I listened to "Freebird", so to hear Joe playing around for ten minutes is absolutely perfect. Oh, & he coaxes noises from his guitar that (although they may take a bit of assistance from his Whammy pedal) require stunning imagination (as well as the technical ability thing). It`s worth buying the G3 in Tokyo DVD to hear Joe play it live. Buy this first though, it`s too good to be left unheard.
Okay but not one to blow your socks off - By: MattLB, 13 Jun 2007
I think "slimchandi" had it pretty much correct in his review. It's not awful & it's not brilliant it's just okay & therefore a bit disappointing. There doesn't seem to be the variety & distinctiveness of song that some of his other albums have & the two vocal songs aren't as good as ones done elsewhere. In terms of the sound of the album it seems like on this album he wanted to try out a distortion pedal & a squealing wah-wah pedal as they're very noticeable & used in several of the songs. I also found that for me the drums were too high in the mix a lot of the time & intruded on the guitar. There are nice bits & Bamboo's a pleasant change of pace, but it's not reallly an album you'd pull songs off to make a greatest hits.
A return to form? - By: Simon Riley, 08 May 2006
Is There Love In Space is a real turning point as far as Satch's music is concerned. Whereas in the 3 albums that preceded it (strange beautiful music, crystal planet, Engines of creation) He went for stranger, different sounds, ITLIS? is a return to what satch does best, rocking out with no holds barred. As soon as the album starts off you know that its different, the opening bars to Gnaah are a totallly different feel to his other recent outings, & the solo in the middle is very good *although I did find a startling similarity between the first section of the solo & the Joe/Caudieux solo in the live in san francisco version of "Borg Sex") The Album continues in excellent form, with the solo from "Up In Flames" Blowing your socks off with the sheer unadulterated speed it is delivered at. But the album isn't alll rock shredding, tracks such as "Searching" & "Bamboo" are reminiscent of the "strange beautiful music" album, & are deep & ethereal. Satch's vocals are also employed on "Lifestyle" & "I like the rain" to their usual effect. Another amazing album from Joe.
Michael Percival on 'Is There Love In Space' - By: Mr. M. D. Percival, 03 May 2006
This is Satch in modern mood! This is one of his albums like 'Engines of Creation' where he doesn't simply rely on 350 notes per minute shredding, instead slowing it down a bit & still creating his unmistakable sound he does so very well. A lot of effects are used in this album- several different pedal effects along with a motorbike sound at the beginning of 'I Like the Rain'. Plenty of soul is injected into this album & not one of the tracks is not worth listening to, something special then!
