This along with 'Trouble' are Coldplay's finest songs, & 'The Scientist' certainly seems the pick of the bunch on the amazing 'A Rush Of Blood To The Head' album.
Chilling piano plays solely at the start, leading into Chris Martin's warming but sad voice singing "Come up to meet you, tell you I'm sorry" which then leads into more heart-felt singing.
The lyrics are very touching, the music is beautiful & perfectly catches the emotion of the words.
In the song, it never reallly breaks out of the piano as it reflects how sad Martin's lyrics are, apart from near the end where a guitar creeps in to pick up the mood to more upbeat.
The song is about being in a relationship, & analyzing things too much about how it went wrong.
This song reallly is something special.

Starting with a simple, understated piano, 'The Scientist' is about the pain that comes with the end of a relationship. Chris Martin sings tenderly over this brilliant track, telling us that, "Nobody said it was easy... No one ever said it would be this hard... Take me back to the start." It's a moving, emotional track covering feelings of regret, sorrow & nostalgia, & is easily the best track on the new album.
'In My Place' was robbed of the number one position by Darius - let's hope that with 'The Scientist' the record buying public doesn't make the same mistake again.
The voice of a generation? You bet they are.
