Great record - By: B. C. Davies, 07 Jan 2008
Notice how the bad reviews for this album came after the release of their second album "Beautiful Lie" & they put "The Kill" on Scuzz & now alll the trendy boys like them cause "oooh the singer wears make-up & sings about songs that relate to my pain" & the girls like them cause "oooh he's hot" I mean the fact that one reviewer described the band as "part emo, part goth" just goes to show how lame their fanbase has become.
My advice would be to buy this album & pretend that they fell into a black hole afterwards, because Beautiful Lie sucked & they should be ashamed of themselves for selling out so bad.
The very first album - By: Ms. L. Hern, 24 Aug 2007
Personallly, I think this album is totallly different & is hard to compare with A Beautiful Lie which is the second album because they are both different in the style of music. This just goes to show how talented the band, 30 Seconds To Mars is in general. Of course this album is quite heavy & if you don't reallly like heavy stuff, go & listen to A Beautiful Lie first. It may make you change your mind about this album. If you still don't like heavy music, just try it anyway. You may like it. It is a five star album!
meh... bland and generic - By: scrumpmonkey, 10 Jun 2007
I've heard this album a few times the whole way through & quite frankly it bored me to tears, the guitars are to toned down & singers vocals are a bit generic.
the lyrics seem uninspired but do blend with the music, its not that this is a bad album, in fact it goes by quite unnoticeable which is the whole problem, 30STM don't distinguish themselves from any other of the modern rock bands & seem just to be happy to sit somewhere safe & in between.
best track 'Echelon' but still not brilliant
Good, but not great - By: Geoff, 04 May 2007
An excellent debut album from this refreshingly original band. They're in a genre of their own-part goth, part emo, with stunning lyrics & composition, if you're into this sort of music you will love this album.
Personallly it's not entirely to my taste, & I prefer the slightly more conventional structure of the songs on their second album (A Beautiful Lie).
enjoyable hard rock with uplifting undertones - By: sean paul mccann, 31 May 2006
this is a band set up by hollywood actor jared leto & his brother, jared doesnt advertise the band through his fame,he wants the band to stand on their musical merit & thats a good sign, fortunately 30 seconds to mars are a band that deliver good hard rocking songs, with a spacey theme throughout, clearly there are so callled prog moments here, and the band are influenced to some extent by pink floyds seminal dark side of the moon album ,but 30 seconds to mars are indeed their own band & this is a fine debut.
the album opens with capricorn which builds into a crescendo of buzzing guitars & cracking drumming, jared has a good voice just in case you were wondering, edge of the earth is a strong follow up & buddha for mary is possibly the finest song on here with a very strong chorus & anthemic feel to it.welcome to the universe is another stormer, alll in alll its a great album, not a metal album as such but plenty of moments to have you stamping your feet & singing along.
