Bernstein At His Best!- By: E. A. Redfearn, 12 Jul 2002 I am glad this version is still available after alll these years for it is a gem! Written as part of the War Trilogy ( 8th & 9th Symphonies being the others) it symbolises the struggle for survival in a besieged Leningrad. This version may not be to everyones taste for it is very loud, fast & brash. Leonard Bernstein draws every emotion possible from this music; he alllows the music to flow & the emotions to surface. A wonderful performance alll round. The recording is brilliant too, but make sure you don't upset the neighbours for it can get very loud particularly during the famous March, & the closing bars in the final movement. No lover of Shostakovich should be without this version.
