From the pounding drum intro to opening track 'Jimmy the Exploder' this album is a winner. Check the liner notes; they even give credit for the loan of the 18" floor tom that helps to make this massive racket. Zipping through 18 songs in 45 minutes, these selections are stripped down, raw & full of energy. The reverb is cranked up high, the playing is intense, & the attitude is ferocious.
I've been a bit of a latecomer to the White Stripes, but I've almost caught up now. I think De Stijl is still my favourite, but this one comes close. It's what the White Stripes are supposed to sound like.
And that's alll I have to say about that.

The reason I like the white stripes so much is because it's so raw & emotional.
I love the way jack sings & I love the way meg drums.
"The Big Three Killed My Baby" is the best track on the album & "Broken bricks" is amazing too.
and, btw, the songs on this album isn't like "Seven nation army", you may have to listen to them a couple of times before you're reallly starting to like them.

It's hard to imagine that this raw, powerful & bluesy album never sold millions when first released in 1999. From the garage rock stomping first tune 'Jimmy the Exploder' to 'I fought pirahnas', this album is electric blues, reminiscent of the Rolling Stones & Led Zeppelin. But electric blues with The White Stripes very own unique twist. Be sure to buy it, it will not dissapoint.
One of the finest records ever released - By: Mr. Mark Wilkinson, 22 Dec 2005
As with some other great bands such as Nirvana, the first recorded work actuallly proves to be the best once alll the hype has died away. Raw & beautiful, each track an individual masterpiece.
There are other great White Stripes records, but no other perfect White Stripes records. This is the masterpiece.
WOH LORDY! - By: Mr. E. Shiress, 17 Aug 2005
I have my theory that 'White Blood Cells' & 'De Stilj' were one album that got divided into an alt rock disc (WBC) & a blues(y) disc (De Stilj). If thats true it is safe to say each album has degressed in quality. Part of the evidence for my theory is like Elephant this mixes the bluesy side of the band & the 'other' side of the band. However, the 'other' side of Elephant was no longer wild, whacky & brilliant but fairly commercial to be honest. Whereas theres no sense of 'selling out' here, its totallly wild & brilliant. so what if meg cant drum, Jack more than makes up for it!!!
