Third time lucky... - By: Tone Death Stephens, 19 Feb 2005
Whereas plenty of bands seem to get big before they've even released their debut long-player,(Franz Ferdinand,Bloc Party)the White Stripes weren't embraced by the wide world until this, their third album. Not that there was anything wrong with their first two, but this could still be their best, despite the irony that it went against some things that the band essentiallly stood for.
This time there were no blues, no covers, no guest instrumentalists, just Jack, Meg & their instinct & imaginations. Guitar, vocals & drums. That's it (having said that, their is plenty of feedback & down-tuning to fill in for the bottom end).
This album was the first musical anything that I ever bought, & what was a complete disinterest for music is now an unhealthy obsession. It could work for you too!
Another thing that I have noticed about the 'Stripes since then is that despite their self-imposed limitations, their music is a lot more varied compared to most bands. Don't expect'Sgt. Pepper's' though, ok?
Anyway, this is probably a good place to start, 'speciallly if you're not used to garage rock or blues, but you'll end up with the rest of their albums anyway, along with stuff by Billy Childish, the Gories, the Stooges, the Sonics, the Monks, Captain Beefheart...
wow....2 people can do this? Amazing! Really Original! - By: M. MISER, 31 Jan 2005
For a 2 person band....this album is reallly good. When i first heard of this band I was disuaded by the fact that just Jack & Meg were in it. but, that was me being ignorrant. This band is so incredibly talented. They have created the voice that...."All you need are drums & guitar" to make a hit piece of music. Jacks riffs on guitar are reallly energetic & clean. Megs drumming is perfect for the environament of their band. The songs come to life with Jack's singing as well. I reallly like "Dead Leaves And The Dirty Ground" but I also liked alll the others as well. I enjoyed the dark track, 7; The Union Forever. I like the variety of different moods on this album. It gives everyone a piece to enjoy particularly. All In All, the Best White Stripes album. But this. You won't regret it!
Brilliant In Several Ways - By: Adam Cox, 21 Dec 2004
Hotel Yorba was the song that got me into the White Stripes, a short but still very catchy song. I got the album after hearing Dead Leaves & The Dirty Ground. This album offers much in the way of diversity & showcases the true, pure musical talent that the duo, holds. Opening with the anthemic Dead Leaves And The Dirty Ground, an excellent song with loud guitar riffs but still sung in a somewhat sensitive voice by Jack White. The album also includes the unique Fell In Love With A Girl, which is as catchy as it is fast. However alll is beaten by the wonderful We're Going To Be Friends. This song stuck in my mind on the first listen. It shows a more sensitive side to the Stripes aside from alll the loud thrashier songs & its a sensitive side that I like in the band. The song gives me some great memories of when I first met a girl that I like. The verdict; an excellent album from opener to ending, a great range of styles, inspirational & musicallly brilliant. Safe to say this album is brilliant in more ways than one.
White Blood Cells - By: , 14 Jun 2004
Track by track:
1. Great song to start, plenty of crashing but interspersed with quieter vocal areas that stop it getting old... 7/10
2. Fantastic track, bounces along with energy; so much that you wont want it to end. ever. 9/10
3. Very nice, piano & guitar give it a little more individuality, classic white stripes style with good lyrics. 7/10
4. One of the best songs on the album, Fell in Love With a Girl screams along at a fantastic pace, brilliant lyrics, concentrates alll its energy into just 1:50 & as a result leaves you breathless. 9/10
5. Very stop-start crashy guitars, if you don't like the style you wont like it, fans-only. 6/10
6. Excellent track, drums & vocals only 50 secs long! Very memorable but very simple. Not something to listen to on itss own, but dont skip it...8/10
7. Slower, dark & sinister track. Full of hurt & anguish. 7/10
8. Great lyrics on this one, an uplifting song to bring you out of the inevitable low of the last, great voacls aswell. 9/10
9. A little more fun here, in a similar vein to the last. Very sweet, might be too much for some. 7/10
10. THE track of this millenium & the last. Incredible guitar, painfully good singing/songwriting come together to make the best sound you will ever hear, ever. If you hate every other song on this album, buy it anyway for this track. 9,999,999/10
11. If you ever get past listening to track 10 over & over, you wont be dissapointed by what you find. This one changed the style a little, mostly guitar & Jack's voice at its best. 8/10
12. This is another one for fans only, but if you are a fan, it's great. No lyrics to speak of, no 'song' to speak of! But the confused distortion of the guitar combined with the sonicallly twisted screams make it memorable, even if you cant sing along to it. 9/10
13. Great song, lovely guitar riff flows into a resentful & defensive torrent of lyrical excellence. 10/10
14. You can't resist singing along to it, probably nearly breaking your neck when the guitar comes in. You'll see why....9/10
15. Dark & lonely song, very powerful lyrics, drums particulaly excellent here, too. 9/10
16. Possibly the weakest song on the album, not unenjoyable, but seems to lack direction while sounding merely ok: a white stripes underachievement. 5/10
If you still don't think you should buy this album, then that's either because you already own it or because you are dead. No other excuses are acceptable, do it now.
