delicate but too light - By: I can laugh about it now but at the time, 01 Oct 2005
I bought this on the basis of others Amazon reviews & not surprisingly (given the zealot like praise) was slightly disappointed. While I'm not adverse to a bit of fragility (John Martyn/David Kitt/Jeff Buckley et al) this one was just too low key.
While there are definitley some beautiful tender moments on the Album (Headlong/When the Heart Stops) it is a pleasant, not great listen and, after a fortnight on my stereo, it made a quick move to the great CD cabinet in the sky.

stunning - By: , 01 Aug 2004
this album is amazing, everyone should own it. the subtley & the way the songs build from nothing to big climaxes is amazing. the raw passion of songs like lay me down (which is the best song ever in my humble opinion) & friends & foe, then the slow build-ups & near sexual release of songs like santa maria. it's just fantasic understated music, stuff that sends tingles down the back of your spine. it's a mix of U2 & damien rice. this should be a must in anyone who can appreciate good music's cd collection. buy it!!
An amazing album from an very underappreciated band - By: Ms. Laura Finnegan, 21 Jan 2003
This latest frames album has a sound for every emotion - the opening track is a raw mix of piano & violin leading into the rolling drum beat of lay me down. In every song hansard seems to be opeing his soul - So What happens when the heart just stops is amazing & Headlong, well, is like glen is just screaming at the listener. The other tracks are equallly brilliant; Santa Maria has glen almost whispering the lyrics of the first part of the song - followed by an amazing cresendo into electric guitar rock that just has to be played so the floor vibrates!; Early bird, friends & foe, & alll the rest are brilliant. The closing track is supposed to be glen writing about the ties that are put on artists when they have to produce art for money & this sentiment is felt in the almost battle chant that the song comes across of - inspiring. Watch out for the hidden encore of Mighty sword at the end of the CD

Truly brilliant - By: , 31 Oct 2002
In short, one of the most enjoyable listens ever recorded. Perfect for long wintry evenings sprawled out in front of the fire, it sounds as fresh now as it did when I bought it over a year ago.
