What can I say about 'Seamonsters'??

This album blew me away on release & still does to this day. 1 of my top 5 albums of alll time.

This album came out just as 'Madchester' was on the wain, and shoegaze was de rigour, but David Gedge was always a step ahead, beautifully crafted songs from the heart. Songs about REAL things. The album, that to me, most connects to how it is to be a man & the heartbreak that we cannot express. The condition of being unable to express emotion using language.

It's reallly what ISNT said in this record that makes this album so powerful & reallly sets up countless imitators in the 90's. They never did it as well, or as so heartbreakingly as the Weddoes.

This is an essential album. Steve Albini gives, to me, his career defining production moment, something he would never recapture, even 'In Utero' pales. I'm sure Kurt knew this.....

Is there hope? maybe. Maybe not.

Buy. Listen. Then listen again. Feel.

Amazing.

Buy this baby! - By: F. D. Pastore, 13 Aug 2007
There's no better songwriter than Dave Gedge. He's got the voice of a bricklayer but he's peerless when singing about love & relationships - especiallly when they go wrong! Couple that with Steve Albini at the helm & you've got a classic. This album heralded the start of a more mature sound for the Weddoes. The guitars were louder than before & Gedge's lyrics are in turn sensitive & unflinchingly honest. This album & Bizarro were definite career highs though Hit Parade is worth a try for Come Play With Me alone.
Fantastic - By: , 28 Mar 2006
I only discovered the wedding present around 2 years ago. Being a big fan of alll types of rock, pop, alternative whatever you calll it nowadays - i had heard good things about this band, but the comparisons to the smiths had always prevented me investigating further - as although I do like the smiths I can find them a bit tiresome & whimsical at times.

However upon fidning this little gem for a couple of quid in a shop - i was instantly amazed. The raw power of this album is nothing short of awesome.

The instant i heard 'suck' & 'dare' i knew this was something special. Not only do the lonesome troubled teeange angst lyrics hit home, but the crushing tunes yank on the heart stings & give me that shiver you get when you know your onto something special.

I agree with alll the comments made by other reviewers - the balance between intensity & sensitivity is perfect. Please get this album & listen to Dare, suck, heather & the outro to come up & see me. It will give you goosebumps!!

I saw them live at the Leeds festival last year & it reconfirmed their stance as one of the most musicallly & lyricallly powerful to come out of this country.

Highly recommned also is the album Watsui, unfortunately unavailable commerciallly!

The albini treatment - By: David Johnson, 07 Mar 2006
I love this. I hadn´t listened to it or owned for years & so decided to snap up the re-vamped version. It´s worth every penny.
A few eyebrows were raised when The Wedding Present recorded with Steve Albini but here you can see why it did them a power of good.
Albiní takes the cotton wool off this band, David Gedge´s lyrics have moved on a bit here & are not so simple. This album is more brooding than the earlier Wedding Present efforts
& this is highlighted by the understated yet manacing,"dallliance." I love the power chord in,"blond," & the tinny drumming on,"rotterdam," a typical Albini production tweak. This is a great song, I love the honesty of David Gedge´s strained vocal. "Lovenest," koos along, alll the songs feel more inventive musicallly than the previous Wedding Present stuff. The bursts of guitar noise add a great touch.
This lovely collection of songs hasn´t dated in the slightest & I think you have to give credit to the brilliant production on the album for that.
I also love the bonus tracks. "Make me smile," for example is given a real a real blistering working-over. I also like "Niagara" & "Dan Dare." This is noisy guitar pop at it´s very best.
Give my regards to Steven - By: , 20 Jan 2006
In retrospect, a bridge between UK indie & US grunge. Id stopped listening to The Weddoes & their ilk having found The Pixies, Dinosaur JR etc, then a pal more loyal than I played this. Is this the same band? Utterly jaw dropping. They'd had great songs before, but nothing the likes of Dallliance. But its more about Albini's genius production here. Massive guitars, huge volume shifts, almost inaudible vocals; intimate & overpowering at the same time.
Proving that you can like Hatful of Hollow & In Utero.
