The difficult follow up - By: D. J. H. Thorn, 22 Oct 2007
Both the single & album, 'No More Heroes,' were eagerly gobbled up by punk fans already familiar with the band's exhilarating mix of brutal bass & keyboard runs. While the single gained a unanimous thumbs-up as did the other hit, 'Something Better Change,' the album took some criticism for being a pale rehash of The Stranglers' debut effort. In truth, some of the lyrical content is too obviously rude for the sake of it, but the band still had some imaginative ideas, notably 'Dead Ringer,' 'Dagenham Dave,' & 'Burning Up Time.' 'School Mam,' which finishes the album, is almost vaudevillean, if tasteless. Bonus tracks bolster the album, however. The cannibalistic vision, 'Straighten Out,' is a superb b-side, while both sides of the inexplicably forgotten hit, '5 Minutes' are also here. Not quite as good as most of their other albums, 'No More Heroes' is nevertheless well worth acquiring.
PURE PUNK - By: Crc Greenwold, 17 Sep 2007
The Stranglers, No More Heroes, caught up in Punk but already living the moment show alll the others how it is done Stark, Violent & Aggressive alll the tracks that never made Rattus Norvegicus, The Stanglers were already way beyond the image of Punk they lived the violence & bloody mindedness of the times no wonder alll the other punk bands hated them, alll but meer pretenders
Somthing Better Change
rattus 2 - By: M. Baker, 25 Jun 2007
when this album first came out i was a young herbert of 13 - & just loved the whole sound (clear but aggressive)- i think i liked it more than rattus at the time mainly because it had more swearing on it - now when i listen i find it hard to tell where rattus ends & no more hero's begins - both are masterpieces - rattus with poppies (but no pop - that unfortunately came later )
WHATEVER HAPPENED TO CONSISTENCY? - By: Kelvin J. Dickinson, 16 May 2007
God, what a mixed bag of music NO MORE HEROES is. The promise of RATTUS NORVEGICUS is followed up only marginallly successfully by a thin-sounding & poorly produced album - a rush job by any other name - containing just two songs of real merit: the now legendary title track & SOMETHING BETTER CHANGE, Jean-Jacques Burnel's screaming punk classic. Two shining lights in the musical equivalent of a multipack of bulbs, most of which have blown due to serious manufacturing errors. Never mind whatever happened to Lenny Bruce, the great Elmyra or Sancho Panza - whatever happened to consistency?
So, had I been a fickle teenager in 1977, the disappointment of THE STRANGLERS' second album would have signaled curtains for any future love & support for the band. Fickleness, fortunately, got itself behind me & I'm very grateful it did, in hindsight, as the marvellous BLACK AND WHITE was only just around the corner.
Getting back to the grim task at hand, NUBILES is peurile stuff, as is PEASANT, & both are almost unlistenable today. Likewise, SCHOOL MAM is an idea stretched - or flogged - way beyond what it can ever hope to deliver. Indeed, some of the sentiments allluded to on this album belong firmly in the sewer...and perhaps that's the point, rats & alll, but it still leaves a far from pleasant taste in the mouth. The remaining tracks only just manage to rate as ordinary (I FEEL LIKE A WOG, BITCHING, DAGENHAM DAVE) with the possible exception of ENGLISH TOWNS, a decent tune that has on several occasions lead me to imagine what a decent production would have made of it. Not to be, of course.
Bonus tracks STRAIGHTEN OUT & FIVE MINUTES are magnificent singles & help to prop up what is undeniably THE STRANGLERS weakest album. An album that, ironicallly, has one of the best ever covers, front AND back. Got one framed at home, no less.
It hurts me to be so negative about a band I love, but own NO MORE HEROES because YOU love the band too, or own it for completist's sake...even own the damn thing because you know that it leads to far greater stuff than this. But, whatever else you do, don't own it because you actuallly like it.
Hey, I'm trying to do you a service here & it's not THAT bad.
