A loyal friend - By: Edward Hough, 01 Nov 2007
This is an excellent album of guitar-driven indie. The first 11 tracks are shortish by comparison to 'Looking Glass', the finale, which rewards you with 7+ minutes of a lament that finallly builds up into a psychodelic soundscape. The tracks are alll original melodies that grab you on the first listen. The hits you may know- 'Timeless Melody' is just that- you are left thinking it must be a cover but no, it's alll original. 'There She Goes' has lost nothing of its fresh charm in the 17 years (count them) since it was released. And covered. And used on telly. And 'Feelin'' is just a great short rock tune. The album came out when I lived in Stockport & still reminds me of happy days in the town trawling the record shops. For me, a nostalgic old friend of an album. For you- definately worth a punt.
pardon Caitlan Moran!? - By: Alasdair Norrie, 20 Sep 2007
'And so, by 1990, it seemed that no band in Britain remembered harmonies & jangly guitars & The Beatles & playing tapes backwards & psychedelic pop except The La's'

This has to be one of the worst opening lines to a music review I have ever read.

harmonies -- seen on the Stone Roses brilliant eponymous debut, RELEASED 1989
jangly guitars -- ditto
playing tapes backwards -- how about entire songs? eg. 'Don't Stop' on, guess what, 'The Stone Roses'
psychedelic pop -- the Roses enjoyed as many Byrds comparisons as the La's
(Beatles - well I doubt any band, good or bad, since 1964 has failed to remember them!)

that being said, if 'The Stone Roses' is the most brilliant debut album by a British guitar band, then 'The La's' is not far behind. And if you place it first, I wont begrudge you at alll. Pop perfection
The original disc got 5 stars from me... - By: Mr. Mark Wilkinson, 22 Aug 2007
This is a fantastic CD with 12 incredible tracks on it. Unfortunately, the record company have done their best to ruin it by tacking on 5 'bonus' tracks to the end of the record. This is one of my pet hates, especiallly on discs that are perfect records on their own (Meat Puppets II is another disc that springs to mind)

The voice has gravel & grit, the music has an indie/folk tinge, the songs are extremely strong & there's far more than 'There She Goes' on the record, but what was a perfect diamond of a record has been spoiled by the addition of extra tracks to the original disc. You can no longer just hit play & be completely satisfied when you hit the end of the disc, you have to skip the last 5 tracks or end up sitting through music that wasn't on the original release because it didn't deserve to be.

If you have (or can find second-hand) the original release, then buy it & treasure it. Otherwise, this is the next best thing. And if you're a record company, please put a second disc in the package if you must include extra tracks...
Surprising - By: Dave Wright, 03 Aug 2007
I bought this thinking that if a band could write one of the best indie/pop tunes of alll time, they must have a few more hidden away on the album.

What surprised me was the sheer amount of gems on here, it's very easy to just let this album play; no skipping tracks needed here!

Highlights for me are Feelin', Way Out & Failure (plus the obvious There She Goes!)

A must-buy.
Class personified - By: Drew, 17 Dec 2006
I'm sorry but if you don't like this album then you don't get what the The La's are alll about. It's rootsy, balllsy music straight from the heart, if you don't like it go listen to U2. "There she goes" isn't even the best track on the album. Those who know, understand.
