A must for Centromatic fans - By: lc260@cam.ac.uk, 27 Mar 2002
South san gabriel consists of the same band members as Centro-matic, playing a more melancholic, less-rocky set of songs. And pretty fine it is too, the tracks reallly grow on you over time. 'Proud son of Gaffney' & 'Glacial slurs' would fit easily on any Centro-matic album, but the remaining tracks are harder to categorise - it's vaguely like Counting Crows first album in places, or perhaps Palace Brothers 'Viva Last Blues', or the third Sparklehorse album. Scott Danbom's violin shines through on a lot of tracks, & 'With Broken Hands' is just incredible, a contender for Will Johnson's best song to date.
