"Fortune & Fame; such a curious game" - By: Nicholas Tier, 09 May 2002
This is an album that I bought when it came out in the mid-80s, having heard some of his early stuff, & it reallly cemented my lifelong love affair with the man. Every song (possibly excepting Limousine Driver) is worthy of it's place. Some might question his revision of Everyday, but I think Buddy Holly would be pleased to hear it made so completely into a wonderful balllad. But the song which takes this album from being good to great is the title track. JT has always mirrored his own life with his music (sometimes painfully), & it is such a joy to hear him finallly getting the point about how much pleasure he brings alll those of us who love him. "Fortune & fame, such a curious game; perfect strangers calll you by name, & pay good money to hear 'Fire & Rain' again & again & again. Some are like summer, coming back every year; got their baby, got their blanket, got their bucket of beer. I break into a grin from ear to ear, & suddenly it's perfectly clear; that's why I'm here". We've known it for ages......
