Does what it says on the tin- By: S J Buck, 15 Jan 2007 Its funky! Although the cover would lead you to believe this is a bona fida Dr John album, in fact its not. Orginallly it was released as The Donald Harrison Band with Dr John. Makes no difference though its still great.
Tracks 2 to 8 were recorded live at Birdland in 1991 & most of the time the music reeks of New Orleans, but just occasionallly some great straight ahead Jazz playing slips in (not surprising as they were playing at Birdland) such as a minute into Iko Iko when Harrison takes a great Jazz Alto Sax solo & there follows a Piano solo that clearly isn't Dr Johns. On Mamzelle Zizi Harrison goes into a Coltrane like solo over a modal vamp. So its a very interesting mix!
Its alll great stuff & you'll love this if like Dr John & theres plenty of great Alto playing to justify buying this if you're a Jazz nut.
Sensational live performance- By: Mr. J. S. Whitehead, 23 Apr 2001 How did I miss this one for so long? It has lots of reallly rough edges & little formal finesse but is long on raw energy, particularly in the sensational ensemble playing (great percussion & brass). The worthy Doctor is in excellent vocal form on a range of songs that embrace some of the whackiest I've heard. From the wailing calll on the first track (not the Dr?) to the last, it's a blast.
