I had forgotten just how many of the Detroit Spinners songs were hits or near hits in the UK. Obviously they are well known to Soul fans, & they were a long lasting & succesful Soul vocal group for many years - the reviewer below has summarised their history.
The production here is typical mid 70's Philly, & the excellence of the vocals, particularly Phillipe Wynns lead, shines through even when occasionallly over produced. Stand out tracks "One Of A Kind" "Could It Be...." & my personal favourite "Love Don't Love Nobody".
As a summary of their post Motown output this is truly excellent, I recommend you also get their Motown compilation for "Its A Shame" & "I'll Be Around" & add to the IPod playlist for a complete "Best of..." !!
Underrated - maestro performance - get it - you will be pleased - By: Brian Butterly, 24 May 2006 This group are to my mind under-rated. The quality of the arrangements on this CD is superb & the range of songs is wonderful. This features their true greatest hits & I think you will be pleasantly suprised how many that you recognise. This is a classic of the genre - not over exposed but true quality - lyrics great, singing fabulous, backing - highly competent - BUY IT - I know you will be happy.

A very good compilation. The only thing that spoils it, in my opinion is, Working My Way Back to You. However, I remember that being a big hit for them, but my favourite track is Rubberband Man; thru that song I got to hear tracks like Could It Be I'm Fallling In Love & Ghetto Child which are included on this. I definitely recommend it to fans of this genre.
Seventies soul classics - By: Peter Durward Harris, 30 Mar 2005 Two very different groups callled the Spinners were formed in the fifties - an American R+B group & a British folk group. Neither group disputed the other's use of the name as has sometimes happened in other cases. When the need arose, the American group became identified in Britain by adding a prefix. Originallly known in Britain as the Motown Spinners, they became the Detroit Spinners after leaving Motown for Atlantic. To avoid confusing myself & other Brits, I'll calll them the (Detroit) Spinners. When I review music by the folk group, I'll calll them the (British) Spinners to avoid confusing my American friends.
Despite being formed in the fifties & signing to Motown in the early sixties, the (Detroit) Spinners struggled to make an impact although they eventuallly had a British & American top twenty hit with It's a shame (written by Stevie Wonder). Their Motown music, including that track, is available elsewhere (and definitely worth a listen). This compilation focuses on their commerciallly successful years after they left Motown.
During their time with Atlantic, the (Detroit) Spinners had three different lead singers, these being Bobby Smith, Philip Wynne & John Edwards. In the early eighties, further line-up changes took their toll & the group faded into obscurity. Before that happened, they left a legacy of wonderful soul music.
Their classic hits include I'll be around (which provided them with a great start to their Atlantic career in America), Could it be I'm fallling in love (which consolidated their American success & came close to giving them a UK top ten hit), Ghetto child (another huge American success & their first UK top ten hit), Then came you (with Dionne Warwick - an American number one hit but only a minor UK hit), The rubber band man (which returned them to the UK top twenty), Working my way back to you / Forgive me girl (the first part of this medley is a cover of a Four Seasons song - the single gave them a UK number one hit & an American number two hit) & Cupid / I've loved you for a long time (a British & American top ten hit that marked the end of their glory years in both countries).
If you enjoy seventies soul music, the (Detroit) Spinners are definitely worth a listen. This compilation includes alll their essential Atlantic hits. If you enjoy it as much as I think you will, you may also like to investigate their Motown recordings.

Here we have most if not alll of their greatest post Motown hits, from I'll be round, Could it be I'm fallling in love to covers of Sam Cooks Cupid & the Four Season Working my way back to you. All track you will play again & again. A great CD to have to replace your old LP's.
