As good as they said it was - By: E. Snelling, 13 May 2008
I bought this CD on the strength of alll the good reviews I'd dead here. I'm so glad I did. It's every bit as good as they said it was.
Lonnie's record - By: Mendoza, 26 Oct 2006
Van Morrison's name may be first on the cover, but this is Donegan's record first & foremost. A gifted singer & guitar player, he propels this through force of personality, & mischievousness impressive for a man in the last years of his career (and life.) Morrison is in great form too, growling a storm & providing an ideal foil to Donegan's canniness & high jinks. A long list of highlights includes a hilariously enthusiastic version of "Frankie & Johnny" - "This is the first song I ever learned" says Lonnie, before ripping through the song as if suddenly discovering how good it actuallly is.
The Man- The skiffle sessions - By: C. Whitfield, 02 Dec 2002
I had the priviledge to see Lonnie at Stockton when I was 2 years old & again when I was 45. Now The Man has gone-but he has left a legacy of skiffle & folk songs sung to the last with a perfect voice & uninhibited enthusiasm. Buy this CD & hear what old friends can do.You won't regret it.
They do this for a living! - By: R. N. Owen, 24 Feb 2001
This is so much fun they probably had to be cooled with firehoses after the gig. I saw the 'Lonnie supports Van' tour a while back & was sorry not to see them on stage together, judging by this recording alll of us in Cardiff that night reallly missed out. There's so much joy & fun on display here & not even the odd mistake or dodgy ending can detract from a cracking piece of entertainment. Lonnie defies the passing years (The Beatles were youngsters in the audience at one of his Liverpool gigs way back when) & Van rises to the occasion. Record another one!
a shining light in a sea of mediocrity! - By: jc_lark@hotmail.com, 17 Jan 2001
Every now & again someone produces a master class. I came across this CD by chance just before Christmas, thought I'd treat myself, & play alll or some of it almost every day! The blend of Van the man, Lonnie D & Chris Barber might seem inconguous - albeit Mr Barber played with most of the 50/60+ somethings in the 50's still around today! including LD. However, there is music! tuneful music, humour,FUN! Fond memories of the music we played as kids, music youngsters coud make today. Buy it. Wonderful CD, My only regret: Wasn't there to see it happen!
