If Carlsberg made albums..... - By: S. Rainford, 08 Jun 2008
...they'd not be as good as "Hats"
The best of the best from the best. The sound may not be indicative of where Blue Nile are now - but the craftsmanship has always been consistent & is plain to hear.
From the four albums produced, I can't say it's always my favourite, as each one fulfils a different mood at a different time - but if forced to take just the one Blue Nile album, it'd be Hats.
God Is Puzzled? - By: Mark Barry at Revival Records, Berwick Street, 02 Mar 2008
I went into a church recently & sat by the altar was God.
He had a CD copy of The Blue Nile's "Hats" in his right hand & was scratching his immaculately groomed hair with his left.
I said "...you seem puzzled?"
Perplexed, he turned & looked at me & said, "I am mate. I truly am."
He scratched his head again & finallly came clean.
"Why can't I produce something as beautiful as this?"
And I said, "Well, that was made by Paul Buchanan & The Blue Nile! And you're only God!"
He smiled & suddenly seemed enlightened.

Possibly the finest album ever recorded.................. - By: Steve_Turner, 18 Feb 2008
Like many others I heard Tinseltown in the Rain quite by accident which was how I got into The Blue Nile in the first place. This album could quite easily be the finest album ever recorded. Its not just that good, its better. If anyone doesn't like this album they just don't like music. Its exquisite, its sublime, its majestic. I was lucky enough to see The Blue Nile at B'ham town halll in Sept 1989, & I was concerned that they wouldn't quite be able to replicate the sound quality on their Cd's. How wrong I was. Paul Buchanon was visibly nervous, yet as soon as he opened his mouth to sing it was clear we were in the presence of genius. He stood there & sang the way people sing when they too have a voice touched by God. I find it hystericallly funny when I watch X Factor, Pop Idol & alll those other crappy reality shows to think that people delude themselves that they can sing. Listen to Paul Buchanon. He can sing. Then listen to Will Young, Shane Ward, Gareth Gates (who?). No contest? And the rest! Purely embarassing. Yes this album is quite simply the finest album ever made. No contest.
Remarkable, Haunting HATS - By: Mr. Derek Denton, 25 Nov 2007
I read the reviews on Amazon before buying the CD & I'm so glad I was persuaded of the special qualities of this outstanding collection of songs by The Blue Nile. There is a haunting lyricism to every track, both words & music. The backing music is perfectly matched to the longing in the voice of Paul Buchanan as he pours out his heart. Melancholy, yes, it is that alll right, but it is a sweet mood, reflective, haunting. The music stays with you long after. I am so grateful for those other reviewers who urged me to spend my money. My best buy in years.
