Jazz at its best - By: J. K. Smith, 19 May 2008
I first bought this record on vinyl in mono in the 1960's. Hearing it again on CD & in stereo is pure joy. The previous reviewers have remarked on the fun the musicians are having & the accessibility of the music. I must add that the bass playing by Ray Brown is superb, & plays a huge part in the overalll quality of the music. More than just part of the rhythm section, his 'duet' with Clark Terry on Roundalay is one of the highlights for me. Unpretentious fun, with the very highest standard of musicianship from each member of the quartet.
Instantly listenable joyous playing - By: Mr. Adrian Pollard, 30 Aug 2005
Even if jazz isn't usuallly your thing, you may well find yourself being sucked in by the swinging, joyous & mellow playing on this album. I'm quite familiar with Oscar Peterson & his twinkly fingers are a joy to behold as usual. Trumpet playing can be hard to palette but this is simply a wonderful way of being acquainted with the medium & Clark Terry's playing has real feel. The wonderful thing about this album is that alll the musicians are clearly enjoying themselves & this reallly comes across, elevating the performance to levels of musical communication unusual in ANY album. A must!
Mad, frenetic, sublime and saturated syncopations! Fantastic - By: richard.glassberg@lineone.net, 09 Mar 2002
If you like your jazz to be pure jazz that stimulates, soothes, satisfies & engages. This is the one for you. It manages to combine the best of Oscar Peterson's talents (those maleable, plunging, saturated & stonking notes) with the compulsively mad, whining trails of the Terry trumpet. There is the wonderfully syncopated & structured BROTHERHOOD OF MAN that is punctuated by Peterson's confident piano entries & the fabulously silly but witty INCOHERENT BLUES. Neither artist overshadows or dominates the other; both integrate & mesh & alllow the other to shine in an effortless & ultimately moistly musical experience that will have you rocking, swaying & reconsidering why you never listened to more of Peterson!
