And now for something completely different! - By: Fletch, 20 Nov 2008
Thrill to the sound of Leonard Nimoy croaking `Bilbo Baggins', William Shatner murdering `Lucy in the sky with Diamonds'. An hour of serious humour, intentional & unintentional & excellent music production values shattered by the scenery wobbling just like `Star Trek'. Buy this hits compilation with impunity it is actuallly so kitsch that it's great.
Priceless album may leave you speechless - By: Lou Knee, 14 Aug 2008
I'd only ever heard a couple of the Nimoy offerings before & LSD by the Shatt, & so I thought I knew what I was letting myself in for, but I didn't reallly. The breadth of material covered by both was a complete surprise, the depth of the hole both men seemed to be digging for themselves with such vigour was none short of astonishing. It was akin I'd say to watching an unlicenced driver getting into a fast car & pointing it straight at a brick walll, without a seatbelt on. Brave though, as you'd expect of two starship troopers.
I'm going to have review Nimoy's first, as I think I need to be sedated by several scotches at least, before I try & describe Shatner's efforts. The songs Nimoy 'sings' here were I guess, picked for him by someone who knows more about music than alias Spock clearly does. The songs are nice, very 60sish, a bit Greenwich Villagey & a few are classics. So what on planet earth must the writers of these famous songs have thought when they were told by their agents that a Mr. Leonard Nimoy was bringing out recordings of them? I would love to have seen some of their faces when they actuallly heard the recordings for the first time. Easy listening classics are tested beyond their limits with Nimoy's rigid monotone voice. You can almost hear the clanky gear changes as Nimoy is forced to try different notes in the same song, poor man. But he does bring something new to some of them, with one or two reallly suiting him, such as If I Were a Carpenter, If I Had a Hammer, & the excellent Vulcan song Highly Illogical. The arrangements could not be cheesier in general, or more catchy on some of them. Carpenter in particular has a very kinky arrangement & this has to be now my favourite version of this great song, although I know that's sacrilage. The slower songs reallly weren't right for him, as long lingering notes are for serious singers only. He falters his way through Abraham, & murders Sonny, quite horribly.
Now, to try & make some sort of sense of William Shatner's pseudo musical offerings. No, I can't do it right now, sorry, far too sober to attempt that, I'll have a go another day. What heroes these two guys are though for giving us these unforgettable versions of popular songs & proving that not alll big name actors take themselves seriously. This album is highly addictive, captain, & that's not at alll logical. LLAP.
Words fail me - By: T. Krings, 20 May 2008
Words fail me. Listen to William Shatner decaliming Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds & marvel if you are on a bad acid trip yourself. Shatner is...well...let's say special. Nimoy on the other hand actuallly sings reasonably well, sometimes using his Spock alter ego. Truly a life changing experience.
All aboard the starship - By: Philip Gallier, 14 Sep 2007
This album has blown me & my mate Ryan McDonald out of the water. This is a great album to play when you are getting ready to go out to chess club. Ryan my friend & me like to listen to this when we go train spotting together & also when we are studying chess masters. Ryan played this at his cousins party & the girls loved us & thought how cool we were. I have this on my walkman & I love to listen when I go into the forest to do some bird watching. Get this album
It's music Jim, but not as we know it! - By: P. Bell, 05 Jan 2007
This is an epic artifact of ego over talent. I shalll be seeking out a copy of the Transformed Man as soon as I finish this review. To be fair to both parties Shatner knew he could not sing a note, so he avoided any trace of melody whatsoever, & Nimoy has at times, he could sing, done a creditable job on a number of songs.
Highlights for me are the Shatner tracks "King Henry the Fifth", "It was a very good Year", the most amazing(I use the term without any exaggeration at alll) version of "Lucy in the sky with Diamonds", Nimoys tracks "Highly Illogical" & "Spock Thoughts".
A must buy for those who love the exotic/strange/brave with the heart of a lion/John Zorn/Star Trek or those who wish to hear the most amazing destruction of a Beatles song.
