A great slice of gedge - By: David Johnson, 02 Mar 2006
This is well worth buying by fans of this band because it reallly highlights the incredible consistency of David Gedge´s prolific songwriting during the mid nineties.
Regular listeniners to John Peel´s show will remember that The Wedding Present were always one of the bands that could be relied upon to record high quality sessions for the show & this collection bears testament to that.
One of the highlights has to be the riff on,"softly, softly," although it isn´t the greatest song lyricallly this group always know how to write a catchy hook. One of my favourite Wedding Present tracks, "Spangle," with it´s trademark bare, honest lyrics is absolutely amazing here as is the infectious,"So long,Baby," a festive fifty entry during that particular year.
David Gedge can be portayed as the average guy embittered when he sees girls go for superficial trappings, the final track,"sports car," is a typical example of this.
I love Gedge´s songwriting, you can relate to it so easily. It´s for real people, living everyday situations. I would recommend this to anyone who wants to witness the magic of this band.
