Something for everyone - By: Dmitri M. A. Hubbard, 16 Apr 2008
This album has something for everyone (even racists, if you thing about "One in A Million"), but generallly was partiallly opportunistic (releasing the EP - Live Like a Suicide) & another four acoustic tracks. How it would look to fans was very much parodied within the album cover which exploits the tabloid nature of their press at the time. The songs are alll solid, even the acoustic version of "Your crazy" generallly seems to work better than the electric version. 'Patience' is a fantastic song which, at the time reallly showed people some of the potential range & scope of the band. "Used to Love Her" is very tongue in cheek & reminds me of the feel of "No Expectations" by the Rolling Stones. Signallled the potential for the band which would be more fully explored in the (somewhat overblown but with many good songs) Use your Illusion albums.

The Live - Like A Suicide EP reallly reminds me of Aerosmith, Johnny Thunders & New York Dolls. If you like those bands you will probably recognise the influence here. Great tongue & cheek lyrics "I lead a reckless life, & yknow, its my only vice".
THEIR LAST GREAT RELEASE - By: B. L. Gilley, 06 Aug 2007
Appetite was a raw, balllsy rockin album with attitude. Lies was basicallly showin us what else they could do. Some crackin live tunes followed by some chilled out soulful acoustic songs that i have yet to hear anything better ( apart from nirvana, A.I.C & pearl jam unplugged)Shame the follow ups use your illusion(1&2) were axl's way of sedating his ego by releasing the over the top pop rock cheese. if he had his way he would have had some female backing singers & a guy playing the triangle if it meant he could have a bigger stage...ooops he did. Anyway get this album. its decent rock music stipped down to the bare essentials one that i listen to at least once a week( & i have owned it since 1993)
great but not world class which i always expect from g'n'r - By: sean paul mccann, 19 Jul 2006
released in 1988,the reason for the release of this is debatable, was it released because the world needed to hear it,or as a means of taking cold cash of us alll after the success of appetite for destruction, regardless this is an album of two halves literallly, the first four songs are a recording of a live show, although its possible that the audience cheers were added according to myth & the remaining four songs are acoustic numbers, three of which are new songs as youre crazy is an acoustic version of their own song which appeared on the legendary debut.
The live tracks are taken from their ep live like a suicide so they werent entirely unheard of songs but they are still excellent alll the same, reckless life is a fist stomping, sleaze ridden classic, nice boys is camp with regards to lyrical style but is still a great song, move to the city is enjoyable & mama kin is again excellent,so side a passes the test.
The acoustic songs start with the legendary & fan favourite patience, the song builds into an awesome track with great sing a long moments, used to love her is a very tongue in cheek song about killing the girl you love because she wont shut up,but again a great fast, uptempo number, your'e crazy is good but not better than the original heavy version so weighs the quality down slightly & the album ends with the controversial, riot inducing, one in a million which is basicallly an axl rant about immigrants & aids & such like, its a song that left slash feeling uncomfortable as he is half black himself but they were always the most dangerous band in the world so i doubt if that was a big concern to Axl.
This is still a vital collection of songs, but thats what it is,a collection of songs as opposed to an album if you understand what im saying, guns n roses will never be guns n roses again to me regardless of Axl carrying the bands name on,this is a fine example of the bands capabilities but if for some reason the band are new to you then waste no more time & get 1987s appetite for destruction.
Why hated? - By: , 09 Jul 2005
I can't see why many people dislike this album. Yes, it only has eight songs. Yes, its basicallly a merging of the original GNR EP & four new acoustic songs. But it is by no means a bad album.

The first four live songs (although I'm curious whether they were actuallly recorded live or just have an added audience effect) are great. Mama Kin is a cover of an Aerosmith song, & it manages to live up to the original & even improve it slightly.

The next four "acoustic" songs are even better, with I Used to Love Her being the best song on the album. There's also You're Crazy - which is on Appetite For Destruction, but I somewhat like this version better for some reason. The controversial One in a Million should not be simply put down but people should actuallly listen to it & see what a good song it actuallly is, music wise.

Frankly, I can't see why more songs from this album weren't included on the "Guns N' Roses Greatest Hits"

F*@!#N' AWESOME!! - By: psyko, 13 Jun 2005
This is a modern classic! As time goes by, you just realise that hardly any other band have sounded as heavyweight as these guys. They're probably the only other rock band that can match the Stones with their image & musicianship. They sound like they've been around for years, though they'd barely got their first album out! They were literallly shooting stars! First half is pure rock n roll, & the second beautiful & intelligent stuff. Awesome lyrics that no-one would have the ballls to write today....
