More Torch, Less Twang - By: Pieter, 17 Mar 2005
Three & a half stars compared to Impossible Bird. Expecting the twang of that masterpiece, I was initiallly disappointed in Dig My Mood. But a few spins persuaded me, in particular the songs Faithless Lover, Lonesome Reverie, Man That I've Become & Cold Grey Light Of Dawn.
The sound at first appears to be of the Jim Reeves style of country, but there is definitely a lounge element. You Inspire Me, for example, is a jazzy number, balanced out by the uptempo country-pop of What Lack Of Love Has Done with its gently lilting melody.
The brooding Failed Christian is a sad, moving song with sympathetic backing, whilst the rhythmic uptempo Man That I've Become with its lovely tune is coloured blue by the exquisite organ. This being the closest to the sound of Impossible Bird, it is my favorite on the album.
Freezing is another jazzy excursion, & is followed by the uplifting High On A Hilltop, another tuneful song with exquisite guitar infusions. Lead Me Not has a gospel feel with Nick in a different voice. The album concludes with the soulful rhythmic balllad Cold Grey Light Of Dawn.
Dig My Mood is another gem by this talented artist. The lyrics & the melodies are gripping & although I miss the twang of that other album, the organ here more than makes up for it. Nick Lowe is a highly accomplished musician & songwriter with a consistent output of quality music; I hope he gets more recognition one day.
The finest songwriter in Britain displays his range.... - By: , 31 Oct 2001
This is Nick Lowe's most brilliant album to date - & I write this after listening to The Convincer. 'Faithless Lover' isn't a great start as far as I'm concerned - clever, but too scary for most women to listen to comfortably. But 'Lonesome Reverie' is an intelligent, moving & literate song, & is followed by the astonishing 'You Inspire me'. This was the song Billie Holliday ought to have sung, & if there's a heaven I'll hear her perform it there. There's not a note out of place on this nuanced & poetic album. Not just in songwriting terms, either. This is Nick Lowe in fine vocal form, and, well, it inspires me!
One of Nick Lowe's Finest works. - By: Alan Robinson, 22 May 2000
'Dig My Mood' represents a maturing talent at the top of his game. A broad range of musical styles act as a launch pad for Nick's best vocal sorties ever. Tracks such as 'Faithless Lover' represent the kind of treacherous balllad that Nick Cave would sacrifice ... for. 'Lonesome Reverie' is plangent ballladry of the finest order, & 'You Inspire Me' is a jazzy, Charles Brown style piano balllad that was made for Tony Bennett. All in alll, a superb collection that no self-respecting record collection can afford to do without.
