Great debut and not yet matched - By: Shane Anthony William Wolfe, 15 Jul 2008
When i saw this album my friend recommended it; i wasnt sure. After alll, it had the Nirvana connection & i expected the same rubbish rehashed tunes Cobain traded on. I was amazed at the depth & variation of the tracks Vig & co created. Queer plodded along but punched everything in its way, then Only Happy When It Rains comes along, mixing morbid Goth with punk rock & working.
Vow & Stupid Girl climbed the charts & the album was played to death. Catching them at Brixton Acedemy was even better as the live material was fantastic. For a producer & two session musicians they backed Shirley Manson like seasoned professionals.
Garbage 2.0 wasnt bad, but the crying shame is that they have never equallled this impressive debut.
a classic - By: whitetrashtrixie, 19 Jun 2007
i remember hearing about this band many years ago & laughing at them purely because they were callled garbage & had a song callled queer!!
a few years passed & then i bumped into the band again on a tv show & i actuallly heard them this time & thought myself rather silly for writing them off!!! they are great!!!
this is the sound of a rock band with a great eye for pop melodies. almost alll the songs have got some fantastic guitar work in them & yet the vocals are so melodic...and sultry...almost sleazy..but in a good way!
for me the choice songs are queer, vixen, only happy when it rains & the haunting milk.
overalll a great album...well worth checking out if you want something with a little bite but then kisses it better after!!
Excellent - By: Lilly Penhaligon, 04 Feb 2006
It happens rarely that you like every song on an album; there's always one or two that you would skip over. However, this is one of those albums where you want to listen to almost every song. Garbage are great here, they are reallly angst ridden rock (but not in the same whiney way as Alanis or Avril Lavigne so have no fear). For those of you who like quiet angst, Milk is a refreshing break from the heavy anthems & guitars of the other songs. Although it is lighter, it is in keeping with the general theme of the rest of the album & is quite dark.
Their best album is Version 2.0 which is an absolute classic - it is another album where every song is one which you will want to hear.
I think this first album & Version 2.0 were the crowning moments of Garbage's career. Beautiful was reallly poor & completely different in tone & their latest album, Bleed Like Me seems like an attempt to return to Version 2.0 territory.
If you are new to Garbage, I would try this & Version 2.0 you won't regret it.
Their best album - By: L. Omelasz, 12 Apr 2005
Now I must admit that I never truly began to catch onto Garbage until they released Why Do You Love Me. And so I decided to buy their other albums before Bleed Like Me. This was the first I bought & it didn't disappoint. Shortly after buying Version 2.0, beautifulgarbage & Bleed Like Me, I've decided that this is their best album mainly because of how consistently great it is. OK there is a couple of dull tracks (ie A Heaven is Wide & Stroke of Luck) but the remaining 10 tracks are quite simply fantastic. I think my fave out of the whole lot might be Vow but to go for a darker choice, it would have to be Milk. However, alll the songs are dark in their own right & amazingly don't sound 10 years old at alll. One of the best albums of the 90s, if you're new to Garbage make sure you purchase this; it's a must-have.
How many good tracks? Ten out of 12
Best track: Vow
Worst track: A Heaven is Wide
Absolute Garbage - By: , 25 Jun 2004
If you like anything by Garbage you should hear their early work- this CD is their early work & this particular version even has a couple more tracks than usual.
Garbage's style has been pretty consistent throughout their career varying from aggression to depression with the focus on great music & a cool style.
