A smart move. - By: dynamitekid156, 23 Jul 2008
How do you follow up a million selling album? This is a question that many bands have to ask themselves once they make it big - Green Day had followed two independent albums with Dookie, a multi-platinum monster & a show-stealing appearance at Woodstock 1994. A lesser band would mess around for a few years, add an orchestra & release a bloated, rubbish follow-up.
Green Day went the opposite route - perhaps stinging from some hardcore fans' accusations of selling out, within a year of Dookie, the band recorded & released Insomniac, an altogether darker, nastier album. There were no 'Basket Cases' here, considerably less of the toilet humour - instead we have songs about being neurotic, drug use & alternative lifestyles. 'Geek Steek Breath' is about as catchy as the album gets, but even that's about 'blowing off steam' on speed; 'Panic Song' channels the spirit of Fugazi in its lengthy instrumental intro & 'Jaded' is a nod to hardcore.
An altogether harder album than its predecessor, whilst not as successful, Insomniac solidified Green Day as being more than gurning punks & much more than one-album wonders. Commercialll, it'd be diminishing returns from here on out, but their critical reputation was already cemented.
Another touch of Greatness from the best band on the planet....... - By: S. Harris, 04 Feb 2008
Wow!! This album is great. It's probably Green Days 3rd best album. It is a reallly strong album with lots of great songs. '86' being a particualr highlight.
'Geek Stink breath' features an excellent guitar rift & some great singing from Billie Joe. It's an amazing song & one that you won't forget for a long time to come.
'Brat' is a good song that I'm sure some teenagers can relate to(not me!). It is catchy alll the way through & has good lyrics. That's what is so great about Green Day - they know how to write good lyrics.
So if you like GREEN DAY, you have got to buy this album!!! It reallly is amazing.

I love this album!
Well, obviously, otherwise I wouldn't have bought it, but anyway...
It's a lot punkier than some of the other Green Day albums, & is much more raw. In my opinion, this makes it AWESOME.
Best tracks are Stuck With Me, Brain Stew & Walking Contradiction, which are quite different & yet still reminiscent of the band :)
It's an immortal album, which I bought a few years ago & still love & eventhough I would only've been four when it was originallly released, it still appeals to me & my age group :D
BUY IT NOW :)

Definately the best Greenday album. Gritty & darker than most other Greenday, this album takes a little longer to get into, but it is definately a grower. Anyone who is just getting into Greenday after American Idiot should definately check this album out. Its not instantly catchy, but its the one Greenday album I keep coming back to the most. "Brain Stew" "86" & "Stuart & the Avenue" are alll great tracks... In fact its alll great. My personal favourite "Babs Uvula Who?" should be on alll compilations.
My favourite Green Day album! - By: ParanoidAndroid, 23 Nov 2006
This is one of my favourite albums & I think it's one of Green Day's best. My favourite track is 86 but Stuck With Me, Stuart & the Ave. & Brainstew come close. The only tracks I'm not keen on are Jaded & Walking Contradiction but 12 out of 14 good tracks isn't bad!
