Crazy Start - By: Mr. Peter Steward, 11 Apr 2008
Shortly after his first album Young released a rather patchy album that's real claim to fame was the first appearance of Crazy Horse. The voice is more assured than on the opener but that takes away some of the quirkiness that made the opener sound fresher than a rather stodgy offering in which Young seems to be desperately trying to make a niche for himself.
Again, we have a Masterwork... - By: Mark C. Danzig lll, 30 Nov 2006
CD-that is using master tapes EQ'd for a 1970 LP, or at least from 1999 (thats got to be a mistake-im sure it came out in the late 80's or early 90's)
This needs to be remastered, along with much of the rest of his work.
Get on with it, WB & Neil...
A FIVE STAR CLASSIC - By: Johnnybluetime, 11 Oct 2006
This is by far & away NY's best "rock" album.A timeless classic that has rocked for 37 years & will probably rock for another 37 yet.NY's first album with Crazy Horse & their best together shows them to be the perfect backing band for him. There is not a bad track on here - from the hypnotic fiddle of Round And Round to the guitar pyrotechnics of Down By The River it's alll good. This is the album that had me buying crap NY albums for years. When he puts away that damned acoustic & the pretty little melodies that make you realise how trite his lyrics can be & plugs in the electric he rocks like no one else with the exception of The Allman Brothers.

This & the 5 star ON THE BEACH,which is pretty much unlike anything else he's ever done, are the most complete albums he's made, add to them LIVE RUST,FREEDOM & WELD,which are genuine four star albums, chuck in AFTER THE GOLDRUSH,HARVEST,ZUMA & RUST NEVER SLEEPS, & you've got yourself the essential NY collection.Just about everything else is patchy at best & downright awful at worst, with the honorable exception of TONIGHT'S THE NIGHT,which is one of those albums you'll rate highly without ever playing much, and DEAD MAN,which is interestingly ambient.

Unlike a lot of the other albums rated here by his devoted fans this is truly worth five stars and,if the dial went that far,I'd give it six.Buy it!Given how cheap it is you don't reallly have an excuse not to.
Neil & Crazy Horse at their VERY BEST! - By: Mohammad A. Rahman, 01 Nov 2004
This is the first album recorded by Neil Young & Crazy Horse & it remains the best! That is not to dismiss their other excellent recordings (they're alll worth getting) but this is my favourite. "Cinnamon Girl" positively roars & thrashes about like a wild beast & provides a wonderful opener. "Down By The River" & "Cowgirl In The Sand" are epic rockers that are magnificently played. "Running Dry" is haunting & spooky whilst the title track & "The Losing End" are lovely examples of country rock. The power of this album has failed to diminish since I first heard it almost 12 years ago. AWESOME! BUY IT IMMEDIATELY.
My favourite Neil Young album - By: , 10 Sep 2004
This is very good. Its got well recognized Young classics: Cinnamon Girl anyone with a passing knowledge of Young will have heard, but also Down By The River & Cowgirl In The Sand - both epic tracks. The reason this only gets 4 starts though is Round & Round - which has always sounded a bit dreary & somewhat repetative. Maybe its just a personal taste think. Otherwise I'd say to anyone who hasn't heard Young "buy this CD & you'll be hooked".
