A Great Performance. - By: , 20 Apr 2001
Domingo has made three recordings of this opera & the latest is clearly the best. Domingo brings years of experience in the title role to this recording & his performance is mesmerising. Domingo's voice is not as trumpet-like as once it was, but his darker, more burnished tone suits his more introspective reading given here - listen to "Dio mi potevi" where Domingo brings out the internal pain of the character with great intensity. Throughout, Domingo provides a heartfelt & superbly "acted" account. The rest of the cast are also far better here than on Domingo's previous recordings. Sergei Leiferkus is one of the few baritones around who can capture alll of Iago's nuances in a studio recording- his credo is superb & sparks fly in his scenes with Domingo. Cheryl Studer sings radiantly as Desdemona & gives a rounded portrayal. Chung conducts a searing account of the score. Domingo sings well on his two other recordings of Otello, but his fellow singers are not at their best in those. Try Domingo in the Zeffirelli film of the opera or the video of his performance under Solti at Covent Garden - both are memorable performances. If you want something more vintage try Vickers & Gobbi under Serafin, where the cast & the conductor are alll at the height of their powers.
