War For The Planet Of The Apes

Ending a story is never easy, especially when that story is the final part of a movie trilogy. Take the Godfather trilogy, or the Dark Knight. Sure, some fans will argue that both are perfect, but most will say that the final film lets the rest down. For Matt Reeves, director of Dawn of the Planet of the Apes: the second of the planned trilogy of the Ape reboot, the task seemed like a huge one. After blowing audiences away with Dawn: an emotional complex action film that improved on Rupert Wyatt's Rise in every sense, Reeves was given the job of closing out Caesar's story. Don't worry, War is a masterpiece.

War For The Planet Of The Apes Review

Set two years after the events of Dawn, Apes and humans are in an all-out war. Caesar must protect his race from enemy soldiers, while also dealing with the guilt of having to kill his friend Koba: who started the war, at the end of Dawn. His goals are shattered by the murder of his family at the hands of the Colonel (Woody Harrelson), leading Caesar to leave his kind and seek revenge.

For a film called War of the Planet of the Apes, it plays less like a traditional war film. Instead it's more of an existential journey, with a good dose of action, of Caesar himself, and the creation of the legend that he will become to future generations of apes. The film has more in common with war films like Apocalypse Now (there is even an Apeocalypse Now pun in the film) than something like Saving Private Ryan. The War of the title is a war of ideologies between apes, and the increasingly desperate humans.

Matt reeves has capped off a truly brilliant reboot trilogy with possibly the best film of the entire franchise.
